Anyone fished the Mamquam for Chum recently?
« on: November 01, 2011, 09:49:14 AM »

I'm heading up this coming weekend, and I was wondering if anyone's had any success up there. Or failure, for that matter.
Thanks.

Leave those very few Mamquam fish alone...we need EVERY fish to rebuild that run.
Even Catch & Release can have a negative impact if fish are not handled in a top notch manner.

I'm basing that on the number of fish I counted in two pools that would usually be stacked and speaking to locals up there, I didn't bother fishing it.

That doesn't sound good. Where would be a better fishing destination for chum on the fly?

Stave/Vedder/Harrison, especially Stave.
With C&R in place, there's plenty of room for us fly chuckers.

BTW, I just can't wrap my head around the fact that they might reopen chum for retention.
What a joke! >:(

Alright, thanks. Stave it is. Uh oh. I chose the mamquam originally because I grew up fishing that river, guess it's time to explore new spots

Looks like the Albion test sets are improving so their estimate is now for >900k, so  it looks like the run was late after all.  More fish should be entering these systems over the next week, so it is now reopened.  The crowds are sure to return.

If you are only interested in catching and releasing chum salmon, then consider the Chilliwack River as well. We were there today and quite a few chum salmon, some pretty fresh, were showing in slower waters that are suitable for fly fishing. Since retention remains closed for Chilliwack River unlike other systems, it should remain pretty quiet in terms of angling pressure. We were fishing by ourselves without a sign of other anglers most of the time today.
