I tried the Stave today for the first time this year. I got there before day light and had to wait until I can see the hook. Man was it cold in the morning as my hands were almost frozen. I started out trying to target cohos in this side channel that has basically has still water. The water is very shallow (may be 3 to 4 feet) so I try to set the float depth very short. I got one hit on the shrimp but couldn't land him. After while I got bored so I decided to go to the flowing water to target chums. Within about 3 hours, I had about 6 hook ups and landed 4 chums and kept 2 (There were tons of stale ones but lots of silver ones too). I then went back to that still water and talked to the fly fishers who were there and they said the coho bites basically died down. I could see they had 3 or 4 cohos among them. I tried using spoons, spinners, floating some shrimp...etc.. and got no bites (not even from the half dead chums). The fly fishers continue to pull in chums but nobody can entice those cohos. Would bottom fishing with roe be a better alternative in this 3 feet of still water?
