vaccum sealed roe
« on: December 13, 2011, 03:29:08 PM »

Hey everybody,

I tried searching/googleing this but couldn't come up with any results. This is going to be my second steelhead season (the first season didn't go so well) and I was hoping to have some roe to fish with. However, of the limited salmon I caught this season (work/school = limited time) none had roe for me. My question is about the pre-packaged roe at like wal-mart or canadian tire.
1. Is it even worth buying that to use or is the quality poor enough that I shouldn't waste my time
2. If I buy it am I able to re-cure it, that is do a who pro-cure proccess on it? ( I have read up on curing methods) I know that, yes, I can cure it again, but will it be effective is what i'm getting at.

Thank's a lot for any respones!!

-Andrew

I wouldn't waste my money on that. Rather, go to Berry's and buy some of their procured roe. Much better IMO

There are a lot of good options besides roe.

Go to save on foods and buy a shrimp ring. You can fish them as they are or dye them using pro-cure.

Another good option is to fish jigs. Bent Rods makes an excellent product.

Don't waste you're time on that goo they try to pass off as roe. Shrimp work great low maintenance and effective.

Buy some spider thread, and melnak baitmaker mesh. Goto Berrys or other shops that carry it and ask for water hardened single eggs. Tie up roe bags with 5-7 eggs in each sack. Doesnt hurt to add a little smelly jelly, pautzkes nectar or procure scents to it.

Frozen stuff is way better than the vacuum packed stuff.
I would not touch that stuff.

Used it once in a pinch and it was terrible. Better off using artificial bait, jigs or shrimp as other people have already mentioned.

Thanks for all the answer's guys, I am glad I asked on here before I wasted my money.

There have been a lot of great options suggested and I guess I have about 3-4 months to try them all out :)

Hopefully this season I pull one in before I get to discouraged.
Thanks again,

Prawns are good. I use smaller chunks of them myself. Good luck!

And, uh, trout slayer, would you mind posting a little more often? You advice seems good for my heart rate! ;D

Trout Slayer summed it up pretty good. In 30 minutes I tied up more than enough for a few trips, unfortunately if the weatherman is right it may be some time before I get to use them.

After I cure my Roe i Freeze it in vacuum bags for whenever i want to head-out. they last for over a year easy! I don't use bags, I just use roe by itself and find it works much better that way.

Has anyone ever tried Sunrise cured roe out of Oregon? Search Sunrise salmon roe on Google , they look really good.
