I'd def try it... got a fish yesterday out of a river than gets maybe 100 fish back a year, on my first try 30 mins in (stupid lucky I know), but spoons def work!

I think the biggest advantage with them is the amount of water you cover, just like spey fishing kind of. Tricky part is finding what action the fish like, Vedder fish seem to like the spoon bounced off the bottom for some reason or on the retrieve. Stamp/island fish from what I'v found like it on the swing or jigged, so make sure you experiment a little.

all steelhead will take a spoon on the swing vedder or not! u shouldn't have to bounce the spoon on the bottom. while its okay to touch bottom once in a while to make sure your in the zone accidentally, doing this on purpose will result in an unnecessary loss of spoons.  you likely get the fish on the bottom or retrieve because of the water you fish(upper river) not the fishes preference . its okay to cast on an angle downstream or upstream to keep action in the spoon and keep it near bottom. you shouldn't have to jig spoons unless your in pocket water  fishing soupy water or fishing guts on cutbanks that require short drifts. all techniques are usefull in covering the maximum amount of water. not saying your wrong but your experience on vedder steelheads preferences with the spoon comes from a smaller area(tamahi-thurston) not the whole river.

I do realize this. Like I said it is just what I have found. I went through the runs swinging spoons first, then tried bouncing them and on tow occasions after nothing the first go I got fish the first cast through while rolling the spoon. Could have easily been coincidence, but like I said never hurts to experiment. I've gotten pretty good at not losing spoons finally, generally lose 1 every 1 or 2 trips so it isn't too bad any more. I find that as long as I keep the line tight and the spoon kicking I don't get snagged even if I'm bumping bottom a little bit. When I do tap bottom I either start reeling until I'm just above and keep that reeling pace, or I just adjust the rod tip height. And you're super right about jigging it in pockets. I wouldn't doubt the lower river would be much like the stamp and great for swinging, just haven't hit any down there yet... but then again only made 6 trips back home.

Yup, learnt that the hard way, saw that it was a 6fter then took the gloves off to maneuver and get the hook out.

Yes sir. Whenever I'm out fishing, hiking, or even boating, I carry a big knife. I've survived some really hairy situations out in the woods cause of my knife. It's also good for bush wacking when I'm exploring new water.

That's one thing you should never do man. Never pull out a knife at someone. Knives can easily be taken away from you and use it against you.
