how long did it take you to become a gear whore? or have you resisted the urge? I was fishing today with my islander center pin and sage rod. I started to think to myself  how did i get caught up in having top of the line gear. I miss the old days when a shimano rod and abu garcia c4 reel was top of the line for me...hem.

Only when you can afford it, then why not.  But it doesn't mean you are a better fishermen

Im still fishing my 5 year old beat to hell luna and a 15 year old convergence rod, which is 6 inchs short due to breaking the tip 4 times. I did put 60 bucks into a full servicing to get the luna rolling again. Then I have one setup each for bar fishing, sturgeon and trout, good enough for me.

I hoard fly tying material more than gear it seems. as it stands i have alot of gear but everything is used at some point during each season and nothing fully collects dust.........well maybe the small spinning rods get the most dust

Considering that top end rods come with a lifetime warranty, they're not that expensive in the long run.  It's when those top end rods become back-up rods when maybe you start to think - hmmm.  Then you have a selection of decent "3rd string" equipment ready to go as well, just in case the unthinkable happens on two consecutive trips!

The problem starts when you fish for multiple species and sizes of fish through out the year.

After a while you start wanting dedicated setups rather than being under/over gunned with a "do everything" rod.

There are also times where a couple rods setup differently allow you to fish differently without wasting time switching things over.

Lets be honest, most times fishing there is more casting than catching going on. In that case its nice to have a rod that is light, has a nice action and feels good in your hand and is pleasing to look at.

Next thing you know, after a while, you have a collection of rods/reels/lines the newest addition usually nicer than the last, and you have accidently become a gear wh*re.

This process seems to accelerate if you are into fly fishing with the endless line selections, rod weights, rod actions, line tapers, sink rates, etc.

When I was younger I was a gear whore hanging around the fishing shops and buying cool stuff.   Now I am satisfied with having a couple spinning rods and reels.

Yearly fishing expenses.

Licence               =$30
Jigheads and tails -=$20
lb of roe              =$10
gas                     =$$^*@%^&^$#^& probably $1000 or more.

mine was 85 and change after tags and taxes

Well if you're 65+ years of age and a BC resident, the annual fee is 5 bucks.  Add the 25 dollar steelhead tag and you've got 30 bucks.
