Ucluelet Fishing Report:
With spring upon us, so is the warmer weather and calmer seas. This time of year brings the kick-off to excellent fishing for Chinook on the offshore banks. The feed is in place, herring, pilchard and needle fish dominate the lower end of the food chain. When matching the baitfish this time of year keep in mind that the herring usually averages about 4 inches. With this in place, pull out your favorite coyote spoons. Fished behind your favorite flasher can prove to be deadly if you find the masses of bait. If you happen upon the massive schools of pilchard then it’s time to pull out the plugs and spoons.
Coyotes:
-Army truck, Cop Car, Wonder Bread, Chrome/Green, and Chrome/Blue
Gypsy’s:
-Flamin Hans, Flamin Finney, Blood & Bones, and Punk Skunk
Plugs & Spoons(Tomic):
-602, 603, 158, 530g, 700, 727, 116, and 109
All of these patterns will produce, look to fish your brighter spoons on sunny days and your lighter coloured gear on overcast days. As well, anchovy or medium herring fished in your favorite teaser heads will surely entice these frenzied feeders.
Big Bank(La Perouse), Amphitrite Bank, Southwest Corner and inside south are all excellent places to work gear.
Halibut fishing is in full swing at this time of year. Long Beach, Florencia, Big Bank and the Sound will all be producing quality fish. Be conscious of the regulations that have been put into place this year when fishing for Halibut. Exercise caution and take care in measuring and releasing any fish over 126cm.
Be sure to go over your pre departure check lists each and everytime you head out on the water. June usually brings the first of the foggy days so make sure the radar is working as traffic in the Ucluelet area is picking up.
Give us a call to book a trip of a lifetime. We have plenty of space left for our spring fishery!!
Tight Lines,
