they are really not the same. I prefer a coated running line similar to a conventional fly line but a mono line will cast farther. It's also harder to handle and prone to tangles.

If you are just swinging and/or just want maximum distance get the slick shooter, if you need to mend or strip alot I would go with the ridge as it is way nicer to handle.

The ridge running line backs the heads on the Airflo 40+ fly lines. I have a couple of those and they are great! I also have a Sci-Anglers running line - it's good. For the slick shooter I'd suggest you have a dressing pad or block and a stripping basket.

take a look at some of the Scientific Anglers running lines. I run the .021 mono running line and it has been perfect for all seasons and shoots like a hot damn  ;D
I have tried several other kinds/brands and its by far the best i have tried so far. my dad runs Slickshooter and he likes it and it does work pretty good, its also considerably cheaper than what i use
