Lakes around Merritt, June 24th - 27th 2012
« on: June 30, 2012, 04:01:50 PM »

I certainly have enjoyed a few trips to the Merritt area this year. My fishing success has been limited but most trips I seem to have some adventure and the one last week was no exception. Welcome to the Journal on Fishing with Rod your top fishing web site in the North West for fishing information, tips, video, tall tails and much more.

As I had a Fraser Valley Salmon Society on Wednesday for a post derby meeting I decided to cancel a dentist appointment (I hate meetings in the middle of the week) and head East shortly after church on Sunday.
My first stop is in Hope, for a coffee, I always do that, both ways, to break up the driving and I really try to take my time these days while heading to my destination, more relaxing too.

As I reach highway 5, after coffee the traffic is not too bad a most people are heading South, after their weekend. Many are either towing boats or have them on their roof racks. I wonder how their fishing was.

I stop for another break near the Summit and marvel at the amount of snow not that far above me. As I have done lately I pack some snow in a cut off milk jug, makes for a good cooling agent for the cooler. I also pick up a few tins that always subsidize the gas account.
I reach Merritt around supper time and have a light supper at McDonalds before hitting the hay at the Wal-Mart Hotel that the Leaf Mobile likes to visit; others are doing the same be it in swanker accommodation than the LM offers.

The night passes quickly when one is tired but the night is short as daylight is here by 4:30 ish. It’s off to McDonalds for a coffee and bran muffin, warmed up with butter and jam, a bargain at $1. 56.

A regular is there on every early morning stop and I hear the same stories, I guess he forgets who I am, loves to talk especially about his wood cutting and all the bears he sees.
As my cousin borrowed my rods for a derby at Salmon Lake I have plenty of time to wait, until he shows up sometime around noon. I donot hear from him and try to call him but no answer. I am starting to worry that he got mixed up with the times and has passed by Merritt. Well here to fish with no rods would be just great.

I keep busy though, working on the FVSS books in putting a financial report tother for the pike minnow derby for the Wednesday meeting. I was glad that I balanced with all the payouts for the 805 PM’s brought to the scales on the 16th. We paid out $2 for each of the 805 fish brought in, along with some other cash prizes and also for tagged fish. Actually I did not quite balance being out $2. OK I guess on $2,685 payout.

While I wait I make a visit to the facility at the Chevron gas station. I walk by a keno machine and I am getting low on gas money I gamble of a $1 quick pick for 3 numbers. I just miss the next draw as the seller is checking the gas pumps so I have to wait a few minutes to get my ticket for a later draw.

I get one number quickly but with only 2 numbers left I think I am done, wasted a $1, but wait. The final two numbers are mine and I walk away with a $19 profit, yes money for gas now.

I try my cousin again and finally he answers and is in Merritt having lunch, he tells me he thought I was in Merritt only on Sunday. We meet up and I am glad to get my rods, so I can fish. He tells me there was a substation fire on Douglas Lake Road so being a news hound I say will check it on my way to see Lew at his secret lake, it’s on the way.

But first I use my newly found fortune to top up the Leaf Mobile’s fuel tank. I also walk over to Canadian Tire before heading north to see Lew. I am just going by Nicola Lake enjoying the view and listing to Merritt’s radio station, wondering if there is an item about the fire.

The news comes on but no report but someone talks about losing an envelope with some money in it by the Merritt Seven Eleven. The report trigs something in my nearly 69 year old mind, where is my wallet, I donot feel it in my pocket.
I pull over at a rest stop and start looking for it. Those that know the LM finding something in the cab or back know that is no easy task. I am frankly pulling stuff out onto the pavement of the rest stop. Anyone driving by must have wondered what is that idiot doing. There is no money in the wallet but of course all ones cards and my fishing license of course. A while ago I wonder if I will be fishing with no rods but now maybe no license.

The search is to no avail so I turn around and head the 10km back to Merritt. I try not to speed as if I get pulled over and no license would be hard to explain. I also wonder where I might have dropped it, at the gas station I bet. I hope someone is honest who have maybe picked it up as I have done over the years with close to a couple of dozen of both wallets and Cell phones returned. I remember dropping my wallet years ago while launching a boat but a person returned it to the RCMP. Will I be lucky this time too?
I finally reach the gas station and as I start to turn in towards the pumps I see a black thing lying on the pavement. It’s where I had parked before going into Canadian Tire. Whew, third time lucky today, a keno win and my rods back from Dave and now my wallet.

I head east again feeling good again, I notice people fishing Nicola Lake from the shore, should try that one day. I then turn up Douglas Lake Road and I see the smoke Dave talked about and about 6 Km up I see the substation. I get out and film  and get some stills but do not stay long as the bugs are bad and hard to hold the camera still as I suffer many bites. As well who wants to breath that air in. As I head back to the main road again the fire truck is arriving. I hope to find out more how this started and I think of the fire at Lickman Road in Chilliwack a few months ago, is this similar?

To be continued.
http://youtu.be/bbsNCXH_0KQ is the video of the fire I filmed.

Well after all the excitement of winning the money at keno, finding my lost wallet and filming the fire I know I will have no time to fish today. Besides it is supper time so I pull over at a pull out by Beaver Ranch Flats Wildlife Conservation Project to cook supper.

Venison from last year's deer hunt is on the menu and it is in the form of hamburger cooked in a frying pan with onions and a can of mushroom soup. It's simple but with cranberry sauce and vegetables it tastes mighty good or is it everything tastes good cooked outside?

With supper complete I go for a walk around the area and pick up about $5 worth of cans people have thrown away, turning into a profitable day. I also do some filming around the sanctuary that is full of birds here is one of a yellow headed Blackbird http://youtu.be/ZwmJLWSfY5w.

After 30 minutes or so of enjoying viewing and filming the birds I head to where Lew is camping at his favorite lake. When I arrive I find a few campers there but no sign of Lew, maybe he cut his trip short because of the poor weather, especially the freak storm that blew through the area on Saturday. I heard around the Shea and Davis Lake areas a camper was injured and a few vehicles and trailers damaged by blow downs, most likely trees ravaged by the pine beetle. Reminds one not to camp near one of these dead trees as the can topple at any time, even without a wind.

I do a little more filming of the lake's residents http://youtu.be/53TpLfwc-ug  before I decide to head back to Merritt, disappointed that I will not get to fish and be guided by Lew.

I stop along the way back to town and watch 4 people fishing from the shore at Nicola Lake. They are fishing Northern Pikeminnows using worms under a float. They are hauling in some big ones and have a cooler full. They say they mash them up and also make soup from them but complain they are a bit bony to the palate.

I arrive back at Merritt as dusk nears and treat myself to a Sundae. A local fire fighter is there and I ask him about the fire but he knows not much more than me. Says he was at work and did not go out on the call. He said as it was outside their area to attend fires it took time to get the OK to travel to it.

So after a full day of drama sleeps comes quickly as I park at the Wal-Mart Hotel and dream of maybe getting fishing tomorrow, finally.

 Day three's story later.

For some reason I wake up around 2:30 AM just as I see a truck pulling into the parking lot. I guess it is my dome light that I have just turned on that drew his attention. I see it is a police vehicle as he parks in behind me. He is there for a bit before I see his door swing open, I know he has run my plate. He is pleasant enough as I wind down my window wondering if he does not like me and others staying at the cheaper way of camping.

Of course I am groggy from just waking up and really do not know what I said, if anything. “Is this truck registered in your name” he asks. Of course it is but I donot answer that way. “Can I see your driver license is his next question. I fumble around in the cab that is in a worse mess after the frantic search for the wallet earlier. Gosh I thing, glad I had found it a few hours earlier or I would have a tough time explaining the circumstances now. (I wonder if the constable reads this forum?)  We are just looking for someone with a similar truck like this who has been up to no good. Well there is only one truck like the Leaf Mobile that is festooned with Salmon are Sacred stickers etc.I thought of saying, easy to identify as its one of a kind

I finally locate my driver's license it and show the officer who has been checking out the back of the Leaf Mobile, I wonder what he thought was in all the bags piled besides the boat and camping gear, of course you know it is tins and bottles.

I have seemed to satisfy him and his parting words are simple and brief “you sure have a lot of stuff here”. Of course he does not know the Leaf Mobile and its occupant very well but that is understandable. Good thing I did not have my Leaf hat on. I mumble something like “thanks for stopping”or something stupid like that

I hear his radio crackle and his conversation with his partner in another cruiser as he disappears into the darkness. “ Things appear OK here lets check the Husky gas station area next” as I see him disappear from sight.

Well with this excitement I know I I will not get back to sleep and head for a coffee and muffin at McDonalds to try and settle myself down. I promise fishing stories in the next installment.

The Leaf hat would of either got you tazered or clubbed like a seal. RCMP are usually Habs fans. :)

....blimey, this yarn be shaggier than a matted Bob-tail in a sow'wester.  Next we will be hearing about how the local CBC runs a "No Soap" radio programme every day.  Yarrrghhh... On with it!

Haha awesome!  Welcome to the fishing reports forum!  I've been looking forward to reading pirate reports!  ;D

Sorry for the delay in finishing this report off but busy planning the Chilliwack Vedder River cleanup for the July 14th, I hope a few from this forum can attend as we have two long weekends that have added a lot of garbage to the river's watershed.

Also wrapping up details for the pikeminow derby as well as the last weekend in Leavenworth Washington celebrating one of our son's weddinghave delayed this report.

Anyway after a light breakfast I decided to try Nicola lake from the shore. As I arrived to the spot to fish another chap pulled in. We both tried float fishing with worms to no avail but saw some fish rising.

The other chap switched to a worm on the bottom and was quickly into some rainbows so I switched to that method as well. I started getting bites but they were suckers, big ones as well. The other fellow quickly limited out on rainbows up to about 15 inches while I kept pulling in more suckers.

The fellow even offered to cast my offering into the "correct spot" but I said that's OK. The fellow said he was going home to show off his catch to his wife as he had never caught a fish in 5 trips to this spot. That made me feel more like a beginner.

I tried for another 15 minutes but got tired of catching more suckers so headed to my lake for some real fishing.

On my arrival I set up camp and made a fire to try to ward off the swarms of bugs that were looking for an easy meal courtesy of me. Breakfast of bacon and French toast tasted great as usual.

After breakfast the Leaf Craft #4 was inflated and because the wind was making the lake a bit rough in spots I decided to troll a flatfish and of course the "Gang".

The silver flat tipped with a worm tempted an 16 inch fish and after a spirited battle it found the net. A couple more hours of fishing found nothing so back to camp for a nap, after that rude awaking by the RCMP made for too early of morning.

After the nap I decided to cook supper, last years blue grouse sure was good with fresh veggies and of course cranberry sauce.  After supper I was off to try some fly fishing but found no success, it seemed to be no bug activity and when I cleaned the earlier caught fish its stomach was nearly empty.  Watching some coyotes and a deer feeding in the meadow made for a nice sight as dusk fell.

I fell to sleep quickly as did the night pass and there was no interruption like the previous night and for that matter I was the only one around except other creatures of the night.

I was out on the lake early as I wanted to head home so I was not late for the pikeminnow post derby meeting with the other Fraser Valley Salmon Society directors.
Once again another trout was landed one inch bigger than the other and it was taken on the "Gang".

I was pleased with two fish for a meal at home so headed for shore and broke camp. The trip home was marred by a serious motorcycle accident over the Coq. which I filmed. In my freelance work for Global TV I usually do not film accidents but did this time but I did not get very good footage so did not take it to the studio. I did put it up on my u tube channel, will put up the link later as have to get ready for the next fishing adventure that starts in a  few hours.
