Alta Lake, July 1st 2012
« on: July 01, 2012, 10:02:59 PM »

Put in around 5 hrs on Alta Lake in Whistler today, good fun.  5, approx 1 lb size rainbows to a variety of fly's (nymphs on sink tip lines - deep on to the shallow) and lures (trolling) to show for it and true to the fishermans tales ..... 1 larger fish which got away (likely one of the Cutties).

Damn windy though was a pain ..... very difficult to anchor even with 2 12lb anchors!!  >:(

I learned my lessons with 12lb anchors many years ago. ;D Now I have 20lbs. :) Were there many risers on the surface?

Hey Rod,

Yeah - may have to switch the anchors around .... they are mushrooms too - not my favourite shape for getting a hold!

There actually were quite a few risers.  Difficult to tell what they were taking though as it was so darn windy!!!

Funnily enough had the weirdest experience too - had a rainbow smash at my orange chronie bobber!  Never seen that before ........

Was a fun day - great lake a real hidden gem, given it's only an hour and a half from Vancouver.  Boat launch is a little tight though  ;D

They're usually pretty active on the surface. I've also had tiny ones (6") coming up and grabbing the indicator quite often. Usually we do our trips there in early June but since the weather has been so crappy, we haven't gone at all yet this year. Maybe we'll give it a go later this week. Thanks!

Very welcome - would certainly give it a go, even over the long weekend there was just three other groups fishing, 2 lads of a platform, 1 canoe and 1 pontoon boat.

Despite the cold windy weather the water was warmer (certainly not cold).

It was black and maroon mowhair leaches that worked for us (small ones).

Have fun!!

I caught a small (~11in) rainbow there trolling a black leech last summer. Was hoping for one of those monster cutties.

I heard they go for muddler minnows around the mouth of the RoGD but it was so windy when I went that I had a tough time navigating the area. Best time would be evening or morning, I reckon. Too bad there is no campground on the lake :(

Try a kiwi muddler, you might just get that 12lb or 20lb Cuttie ;)
