Chilliwack River, July 25th 2012
« on: July 25, 2012, 07:34:51 PM »

With the river dropping, I decided to give it a try.

Got there around 930am and the sun was shining bright.

Fishermen were scattered around the run ( only 3 ) and I got to talk to an older gentleman. He told me when he got there, he saw a guy packing one away in his car. We both fished for a few hours with nothing to show for it.

Every once in awhile, I noticed sockeyes splashing water.

Older gentleman came over to me and gave me a few raw prawns and told me that it should work.

I put one on and within a few casts, the float went down and I set the hook nonchalantly. I felt the headshake of a heavy fish and it took off pretty quick. Before I could control it, the hook popped off.

I was able to connect with 2 more but could not control any of them.

Called it a day around 2pm when the sun was getting too much for me.

Good to here they're still coming through. Heading up tomorrow for one last go round. Already have a couple in the freezer but have had too much fun with the springs so far to stop. Seems to have been a fairly good run this year :)

How'd you do? I might be going up a few times in the next several days. Is the F/N netting effecting the fishery that much?

Was really quiet. Got there a 5:30 in the lower river and there was a bunch of sockeye jumping but were not interested on biting anything. Saw two socks caught and one guy packed out a small spring around 6 pounds. I hooked a chromer around 10 pounds but popped off at my feet. Landed a nice 3 pound dolly and a couple of smolts :-[ The numbers of springs is dropping rapidly but the run is due to start tailing off. Was my last trip up of the summer. The nets didn't seem to effect fish numbers at all but from what I heard they are not being very successful in there attempts. All fish were hooked on roe and visibility was around 3 feet and river level was dropping very steadily.

I've never really fished the lower in the summer, only the mid and upper. It was pretty bad today, a few socks and saw 1 spring taken. Its crazy how just 2 years ago you could get into 10+ springs in a morning and now you struggle to just get one >:( I will be out tomorrow for the last kick at the can, gonna have a late start tho.

Cheers

I found the run this year to be pretty good, put 6 fish in the freezer and was hooking about 3 a trip on average with a couple trips at 5 plus. I have found that the run starts to taper off at this time of year anyway. The number of socks was incredible this year. Never seen this many fish out and about but I have only been fishing reds for about 3 seasons so far. Had a couple trips where the socks weren't actually letting the springs get to the bait. Was averaging about 8-10 socks a trip for a week or so there

6 springs in the freezer...that is a lot of meat, maybe with such a small run size a few of those fish should be released to follow out their cycle.

I don't keep whites, so that's my chinooks for the year. Released just as many as well. I smoke most of them and give it to clients for work and I don't keep many coho or steelhead anymore. I understand where your coming from but 6 fish isn't going to make much of a dent when you have first nations nets scattered all over above the crossing.

Honestly don't even dignify that post with a response. The mentality of our fellow fisherman boggles the mind sometimes... Realize the real issues with our sport!!!

Exactly....well put Dereke.  6 springs is nothing, especially when you're providing meals for you and your family.  Be proud Steely that you've hunted down 6 for the deep freeze....beats buying fish at the store that's for sure

There is virtually no recruitment from these fish spawning in the wild because the stocks chosen for this enhanced summer chinook fishery are not genetically adapted to this river.  Basically, what ever fish are not utilized for hatchery broodstock or taken by anglers are only of value to this system as future nutrients from their carcasses.

Not meaning to criticize, maybe I was a little harsh on my reply to the thread, my only point was that is a lot of fish. Congrats on your success this season.  One should be so envious not being out on the flow for awhile. The only advise I can give is only keep what you can eat or share, don't let any go to waste. Fishing isn't only about filling the freezer, but I and everyone else can respect how good a nice slab of fresh red chinook can taste on the BBQ. Tight lines.
