So I hear that the river has pinks every year? I just have 2 questions...

A) Is the run just as big as the odd years? bigger? smaller?

B) What are the best weeks to go?

Every year has a run. Its always a decent run. Its good right now and should be for a couple more weeks before they get a bit stale.

i go for about a week or two every summer, and been going for the last 4 or 5 years. Each year i catch hundreds of pinks all which are fly fishing, and all of which actually bite. A common day is usually about 50. The campbell pinks love small sparse pink, green; or blue small shrimp flies. Also gotten a few summer run steelhead, springs, and early coho. I generally go mid August, this year im going August 10-19 th and alot of the fish are still chrome and tons around. Right now would be perfect timing... but they will be there till about mid september/ begining of october. Man i love campbell pink fishing! The quinsam is great for pinks to but get up early because they shoot straight up and most by 8/9 most them are way up river and at the hatchery.

As far as how large are the runs I have no clue.
 
B) What are the best weeks to go?
Can't really set a date on when they run. Last year they started running up the river late aug. This years run has already started.
If you are able to catch the run, Id suggest you try to hit them up right when they start.
If you wait too long, then they start to 'mutate', as my gf calls it.

I was there on August 12th 2010 - stopped to fish for an afternoon while headed to Tahsis.

My friend was up there for the whole week (fishing after work) and he was catching chromers all week but they were dark by the time I got there on Thursday (the 12th).

Caught a nice jack Spring while I was there, though.
Put it back of course because it would have counted against my possession limit for the 2 days fishing at Tahsis.

Not sure what the timing is like this year but it sounds like it may be earlier than normal for pinks.
I'm thinking that the next 2 weeks will be prime time.
If it wasn't the long weekend this weekend, I would probably be there.

I really resent the fact that they only spawn every 2nd year here.
I have a blast gear fishing for them in the lower Fraser then on the fly in the upper and the Vedder mouth.

I suspect that the alternate year issue here is because they only go out to sea for 2 years and don't have jacks.
Jacks are nature's recovery system in case a run gets wiped out.

Yes, there are a lot of pinks being caught.

Just got back from Painters Lodge.  Fished both the Campbell River and the Eve River which is about an hour north, just past Sayward.  Drive the highway up to the Eve River bridge and then turn around and come back to the Forest Service road (it runs about 20 kms out to the coast . If you head up try the Eve, lots of fish in the river on Thursday.  I was spey fishing, fly rod would have been better I think and had brought along med to large pink flies and wool.  Most fish were being caught on small black, blue and red nymph type flies.  If you go up talk to the fishing store in C.R. they will give you good advise.

Nabbed my limit in just over an hour.  Away from the crowds.  Funny how people pile up in one spot.

Only caught one that was coloured up.  Most were about as chrome as pinks get.

Too bad so many people were snagging these fish then they are readily biting.  It was a gong show, man, woman and child lobbing pencil lead out there.

I have absolutely no idea how long the run lasts, or if it is early or late this year. 

I just happened to be in the area for a few days visiting family on Campbell Lake and stopped by the river on my way to Nanaimo to catch the ferry back to Vancouver. 

The fish are in there in good numbers, and in good shape (almost all chromers) so I would fathom to guess that there will still be a good number in the river then.  But I'm just spitballin.

Just got back from Campbell River, camped at the Quinsam campgrounds located right across the street from the river. Lots of pinks! and lots of SNAGGERS! very crowded as well.
