Capilano River August 5, 2012: Her first ever salmon
« on: August 05, 2012, 06:17:46 PM »

After last weeks success I was itching to get back to the cap just one more time before I go back to work. I figured a change in fishing partners was needed as the last one kept outfishing me :P We got a late start, and were at the river by 11am, we had to get her a day license as she had never fished salmon before and only experience came on lakes with little success, so I'm told. We slid into the Cable Pool first but found we were not the only ones there as 4 other anglers were in sight. Back to the trail we went and walked into this slow moving pool which I had never fished before. We could see fish so that kept our interest for about three hours. I turned two fish in that time with a small olive micro leech but she hadn't had a sniff on her small spoon. She gave up and put the rod down and sat in the shade to enjoy some fresh fruit we had packed with us. I tied on one more fly, a sparse rolled muddler in green. Two strips into my first cast I felt a light tug, then headshakes. I yelled "Fish" and ran and handed her the rod. This small coho around 3 pound went nuts, up and down the pool while I tried to coach her on fighting a fish on the fly rod. She did a great job and slowly guided it into my waiting hands. That makes three of us landing our first Cap coho in the last week, even better it was her first salmon ever :)

For those of you thinking of heading out, the river is even lower then earlier in the week. The Coho are very spooky and the only thing that wouldn't spook them right now is a small fly. Any kind of gear we tried just scared the school off. We need some rain!

Thanks for the report

x2. I love that river, especially on the fly rod (granted I'm yet to catch a 'ho on the fly in there). Nice to know that there are still fish willing to take an offering in there :)
