Ucluelet, August 5th 2012: Skunked in Ucee
« on: August 05, 2012, 09:10:14 PM »

Skunked in Ucee after 8hrs of riding 12ft rollers.   Hmmmmm

Fishing the Inside Passage again - never complain about it again!  Long way to come over and be skunked, couple of small coho hits and a small wild coho released and that was it.

None of the boats were getting them either.

Oh dear, be a while til we are back!

The weather is always a crapshoot even in august.  We were there last week and had flat seas.  Fishing was not what you would call red hot but we had 5 springs in our boat.  This year is certainly different than last year.  Give it another shot.  Fishing can be great there.

Btw Who was your guide?

Won't embarress the guides but they are a big name.

Pretty poor IMO.  We had a reel with braid that kept releasing from the quick release clip (like a LOT of times) - to me you sort it out and spool up a reel with mono so the stretch works with the 12ft swell rather than mess up an 8 hour trip!

Guide was very reluctant to help a lady guest that had no-idea how to set the hook and release the line from the downrigger (again remember this is an uber-slow day too - so each bite was hard to come by!).  Plus the cannonballs were down for ages until they collected enough cabbage to release the clips ..... Poor.

Finally with the weather setting in and clearly no salmon around all guests (only 4 of us) said we'd be happy bouncing jigs/perks closer in for Halli / cod ..... No reply, again poor.

On a slow day a whole lot more could have been done to make sure the guests had as good a day as possible.

Will be back at Campbell River for the remainder of this year for sure.

There are a number of other outfits that do more for their guests (set hooks, release lines, entertain, etc) to ensure a good time especially when the bite is not on.  Even calling up on other guides in different areas to find out where the bite is at, what they are using and how deep.

I've been there a couple of times this year on a friends boat - one day the bites are fast and furious, the next day - having difficulties finding them.

Like most businesses, guiding is self advertising as well. If they are not up to the task, it should be made known,  in order to avoid the pitfalls for the next fellow fisherman. Poor performance should not be rewarded or hidden. Just my 2 cents.

Difficult dilemma though as, how do we know this was typical of the company and not just a rogue 'guide'?  That is the problem with single trip experiences and it would be unfair to name and shame the company based on one individual's performance.

While we are plenty experienced to realise some day are just off - there is still much a good guide can do to make the day memorable and fun - particularly with newbie fishers on the boat too.

Will certainly think twice before using same company again though which is sad ........ however there are plenty of guides out there and plenty places to go.

i would suggest providing some detailed and consturctive feedback to to the guiding company and if they are business committed to service,(which if they have been around a while they must be, as repeat business is the best business) I assume they are willing to listen and make adjustments. most quality business's and people are willing to improve in any way they can and will view the feedback as an opportunity to grow their people and business.

Exactly what we will be doing (feedback direct to the company) ....... it at least gives them a chance to deal with it.

BTW - spectacular storm for Vancouver!  ;D

It's one thing to have bad timing while fishing but it's another if the guide is just being down right lazy and did not care whether there was blood in the boat or not.  Any guide worth their weight will gladly give a quick lesson in how to pop the rigger and set the hook.  I'd stay away from a large charter service as they are usually a revolving door for guides. The cheapest deal isn't always the best but there are loads of guides out there who are absolute quality value.  Next time take a little further drive to Tofino and give Tofino Ospray a try.
