If im bottom fishing for mud sharks and other species with bait should my tension be loose so that the fish takes it and i'll know from a bell that there is a fish or should i just keep it tight to detect bites?

Best to keep the line somewhat tight so you can detect the bites right away. The longer they bite, the more likely they will swallow your bait and be deep hooked, which makes releasing quite challenging if that is your intention.

Here's a good bait for them.take a 6-8 inch live sculpin and cut it's tail and dorsal fins off. Attatch the fish to a 4/0-8/0 hook. The live sculpin will struggle and bleed, attracting mud sharks.

Mud shark???    That is another name for the six gill shark.   They run to 15 feet in the Pacific so you better have strong line.

I suspect you mean dogfish, the spiny dogfish common inl ocal waters.
