The Break Ins Have Started
« on: August 30, 2012, 10:17:15 PM »

On the Thompson between Lytton and Spences Bridge that is.

A van that was parked just behind me got it's window smashed and at first they thought they had nothing stolen but then discovered they had lost a $1,000 camera. :( >:(

I guess they passed up on mine because it is always so full of junk and bottles and cans.

I also saw piles of glass at two other locations so if up that way keep your eyes peeled and do not leave any valuables on your car as people are told time after time.

The people reported the break in to the RCMP as did I of the other 2 locations I spotted.

I know people that took out all their valuables and left the doors open to still come back to a smashed window. Mine as well just get an old jeep and take the roof off so the retards don't have anything to smash.

That is so sad Chris. Nothing worse than coming back to your car and seeing a window smashed and your goods rifled through. One thing that I have been pricing out over the last week I learned from on a site called Liveleak. It is very popular in Asia and Europe and Russia and something that I would stress for everyone to get. It is a dash camera.

Now I'm not saying you'll ever need it but its like house, life and car insurance. When you do need it its good to have. And with the way ICBC works any proof you may have of an accident that works to your favour will bring back the dollars spent 10 fold and videos don't lie. Now you're asking how does this tie into vandalism on a highway or fishing road.

Well the way these camera's usually work is once you start the engine they automatically start recording. But I'm going to speak with some electrician friends and see if its possible to hardwire it to an on/off switch so that I can continue recording after the engines off,
without of course draining my battery. Then I will see if there's any way that I can stealthily hide it from view, either behind my grill plate, ceiling or on the dash, hmmm. Then if a vandal does come along and he happens to be in the cameras viewing range then at least we have a description, maybe the thiefs vehicle or even a licence plate or even just a tattoo, who knows.

The viewing angle is usually 120 degrees to a high of 170 degrees with a wide angle lense and are 1080p, and record onto an SD card. The GoPro is the best, and runs for $129.99 for the original up to $299.00 for the HD Hero2 Outdoor edition, ouch. Expensive and may be to big for what I need but the quality is outstanding and for peace of mind while I'm driving it's worth it. Again this doesn't completely solve the vandalism problem but its a step in the right direction. Having an extra eye keeping watch on your car and perhaps providing video proof sure beats leaving it completely defenceless.

Again, short of hiding out in the woods, staying home or just paying someone to watch your car we are thin on options as to how to protect our vehicles and our property. I was and am absolutely buying one because the stuff I see on the road everyday either makes me laugh, makes me cry or makes my hair curl. I drive very safely and have been a Roadstar Gold going on 2 decades. It's not me I'm worried about and with ICBC proof is what matters.

Good Fishing All !!!

Thanks for the warning Chris, were supposed to be heading up that way next week.

Atherzone, my brother more or less bankrupted himself flogging a system almost what you're describing, he had a rudimentary system it in his rig, but with tapes (Mid eighties) all he did was overright the tapes at the end of their time. camera looked over his shoulder to the road ahead the dash panel. Nobody wanted it!

now I'm told it's catching on , especially for truckers.
What I want is a system that will transmit the recording in case of brake-in. Had my rear window busted out and some kit stolen a couple of months ago at BCIT of all places. Caught on camera? nope.

Hi there Sandy, thanks for your interest. I'm just learning about this technology myself but I can certainly say that a lot has changed since the mid-eighties and the VHS tape. Now there are cameras that are so small they will fit in your hand and with the use of SD cards and IP reciever's a person can record data and send it directly to their home computer. One could also view a live feed if that was the persons preference but I think that would be pretty boring unless you were alerted first that a break-in was occurring.

Come to think of it I remember watching a youtube video of a couple vacationing in Hawaii and they were alerted via their cellphone that a break-in was happening at their house. After police were contacted they then proceeded to watch the live feed via their cellphone and watched the police actually arrest the thieves. Pretty cool. And Yes, even if you have a dash cam it doesn't guarantee that the vandals would be recorded. It would depend on how many cameras you had and the cameras angles of course. But I remember this old saying that goes, “It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.” Something is at least better than nothing.

And mainly for my own peace of mind a dash cam would not be primarily to catch vandals while I fish, it would be to safeguard myself against situations that could occurr while driving. When car accidents can happen and human life can end in seconds driving the car is absolutely without a doubt the most dangerous thing I do every day. Many times a day. Dash cams one day will be mandatory car accessories much like air bags and seat belts, take my word on this.

Plus being able to put cool videos on youtube from your dash cam because of the crazy stuff that happens in front of your vehicle day in and day out would be fun. I just think that if we just sit on our thumbs and talk about all these terrible break-ins and end up not doing anything the criminals win. I think the more eyes we put out there the safer we'll be.

Perhaps some sort of a spy cam?? (e.g. http://www.raidentech.com/miwispyca.html)

They usually make 'em small, which makes stealth easier; perhaps you could find one that fits into the end of a pen, or something. As you've suggested, turn it on before heading out for the day. Keep the recordings in case of break-in.

Good luck, and let us know how it all works out!

A sticker on each window that says "Smile! You're on camera! :)" and that has a picture of a video cam would probably act as a deterrent as well. Though you may get some odd looks on the hwy  :D :D

On a cardboard, just write "NO VALUABLES IN THE CAR!" and put it on the dashboard.

You should get one of those "BAIT CAR" stickers on your car.

However, those thieves are probably too stupid and think it means there's fishing bait inside the car.
