Hooking up a shrimp
« on: September 22, 2012, 08:08:16 AM »

Something much less controversial I hope; my question fellas is how to best attach the shrimp to the hook? Do we use the whole shrimp or cut up? I know nothing about this and so just asking for advise from you experts.

Thanks again in advance! :)

youtube is your best friend. ;)

I use both whole and chunks, depending on the circumstances.

I usually will put the tail through the bait loop and hook the other end onto the hook, or just put a chunk on a jig .

Waay too complicated and more importantly time consuming. Just place it on your hook and secure in place using a bait loop

Clearly never used a shrimp pin before - miles faster and it presents the shrimp in a more realistic shape  ::)

PS.  If you do anything other than 'dangle' a shrimp lifelessly under a float the loop actually pulles the shrimps tail off - it is after all a noose.

Sink and draw with a shrimp pin will out fish a float 'dangled' shrimp time and again.  ;)

I usually just slide it right through the hook and that works just fine.

i just slide the hook through the head, follow through the body. pops out the tail and the only thing showing is the shank and the whole body. caught a lot of salmon this year by doing this. no extra gear required.

I usually bite of the majority of the body and place the hook in the front of the tail section.  I like to have the shrimp rotate like you would if trolling a herring.  I believe the action is very important.

And here comes the newbie question. What do you use shrimp for? Coho, Chinook, Steelhead?
