Hi All,

I just watched the forecast on the news... no rain for teh next 5 days, with a light chance of a "sprinkle"on Friday.

I was at the vedder on Sunday and it was painfully slow. As a relatively new angler, 3 years in, I am wondering the effects of the low rain levels. I know there are fish trickling into the system, and i know the veteran anglers are still having success, but my question is... is the fishing slower than usual, especially considering that the coho run is supposedly supposed to be good this year.

will fishing over the top once we get a little rain? Are all the fish just staged at the mouth of the fraser or Vedder?

Thanks for helping me learn more about the fishery.

Well the Cherokee indian dance is quite thought provoking and enticing while the Navajo dances were fast and exciting, like lightning in a bottle. But the best of all are the Shoshone dances which always enticed the clouds to open and pour life giving rain on them and their crops.

Myself, whenever I want it to rain I just sing a few bars of "It never rains in British Columbia, the girls always warn you" and poof, it rains.

The season has just begun, more fish are on the way. Should start to see greater #'s in the next few weeks, rain wouldn't hurt. I kinda compare the current conditions to steelhead season, tons of anglers and few fish. You have to find them right now and adjust your methods to the current conditions . Try by scaling down the size of tackle you use (smaller hooks, fluorocarbon etc.), try early morning/evening, try moving around to different spots (less crowded areas).Lots of river out there go explore it, there's fish all throughout it.

There are no guarantees, however in almost every past year, the fishing has just exploded after the first major rainfall of the year.

The rains will come, and until then it is just a matter of adapting to the conditions.

I do recall one year about 7-10 years ago when there was no significant rainfall until into November. I remember seeing chum carcasses, that had been yarded up the bank by the bears, that were covered in maggots. I can't recall a year before, or since, when I had seen maggots on a salmon carcass in the fall. Now that was a weird, dry, year...

Given the conditions and time of year, the fishing is pretty typical and can be great if you know what you're doing.  If you're not having much success, I'd use this time for scouting.  Although some fish will move upstream during the day, most of the fish are moving at night and holding in deeper pools or slots by day.  Hike around and observe where fish are rolling and where others are having success, then be the first one there the next time you're out.  Your chances of getting into fish are much greater if you're fishing those holding areas at first light or if you're the first one there that day.

My only fear is that when it starts raining it doesn't start pouring buckets and blow out the river for days.
That could finish the fishing in a pinch.
Medium steady rain would be nice.

The biggest problem the C-V is facing now due to low water is not the relentless snagging in the deeper pools ... it's the poor rearing conditions for coho, char, and steelhead parr.  These low water conditions expose rearing salmonids to increased predation and less available food.  Just one example is Peach Creek which today was a trickle; conditions are worse upriver.

Yeah, this system needs water – sooner the better.

Lil rain wouldn't hurt as long as the river doesn't blow out.. typically the fishing does pick up after a nice pour but regardless of the low water levels there are lots of fish out there staging in deep pools or slots moving up river it's a bit tougher but once you find them bang fish on

MAn I am happy witht he comedic replies on this thread! really good suggestions and I do indeed think i will go witht he Shoshone dance. On wikipedia it says that it's your best bet for moderate rain and many fish.

all kidding aside, how long will it take to see the big surge of fish moving up the C-V after a decent rain starts? Are these fish waiting in the Fraser just outside the canal mouth, or are they at the mouth of the Fraser waiting for the rain? I imagine if they are at the mouth of the fraser, like they stage at the mouth of the Cap, then it would take a day and a half or so for them to enter into the Vedder... Thoughts?...

Pretty much yout best bet is hitting first and last light right now. Until it rains or there is some over cast, those are your best bets

Oh man! Just checked the 14 day trend. Rain got pushed back from Oct.1 to Oct.9.  I'm going stir crazy.

My girlfriend would dump my my friend so fast if she heard me say this but I can't wait for some rain!!!

Perfect my holiday starts on the 8th but I'll believe it when i see it .
