Planning to do this late October and I'm wondering if anyone else has had problems while doing so. My main fear are bears of course.any advice on how to store retained salmon in case an unexpected fuzzy character comes along?

Try Thurston Meadows camp ground, dont know if you wanna pay or not but you can ask to use their freezer, wether or not they will let you I dont know.

How do you store retained salmon while camping to protect from bears?

1) put salmon in cooler
2a) put cooler in car
or
2b) create bear-proof cache by suspending cooler from tree (at least 3 metres high, and far enough from the tree trunk and branches so the bear can't reach it

PS - a bear COULD start prying apart your car if it really wanted in, but I don't think there are enough bears or too little food around that it would go to that extreme on the Vedder

After reading those posts. it might be a good idea to keep the cooler outside your tent

Also worth noting is that any cache you hang in a tree should be done a fair distance from your campsite, as even if the bears can't REACH your food, chances are they can still SMELL it, and that might bring them close by.

When you're fishing in Chilliwack, bears are not the only ones you have to worry about when it comes to fish thieves. Just ask dragonspeed.

I think they outlawed camping on the river several years ago because of rampant grad parties camping near Tamahi.

Not sure what you are planning but you may have to stay at a proper campground.

Keep an eye on your car if you do. I saw one

Camping is banned between the Vedder and Tamihi bridges; above Tamihi camping is allowed and many do, unfortunately often leaving their garbage behind when they leave.

Hide the fish in your shoes.  Bears never look there.

That is a group campground that is managed by the great folks at Thurston campground. You can camp there by making arrangements to get the key from Thurston, however there is a minimum charge of 7 camping spots (7x$13).
