Chilliwack River, October 19th 2012: First Time Coho
« on: October 19, 2012, 03:17:09 PM »

We got on the water at first light.
The only fish I've ever caught on the Vedder have been sockeye, so I've never bonked a fish to show off for pictures, or to bring home to prove to my wife I have actually been spending all this time away from home, fishing.
We got to our spot above Alison Pool, hoping for a little clarity, only to find out chocolate milk was coming down from way up river.
We loaded up the roe and bright jigs. Nothing for the first hour. Then some chum started to jump around in what used to be a decent hole and we thought the fun would begin.
We both tagged into a couple chum, only to lose them not much later.
Headed up to see the gong show of the shoulder to shoulder action near the hatchery. I've never seen anything quite like it. The two of us had a lot of fun watching people tangle lines and get snagged on the bottom... I'm not saying anything else.
We headed back down river and figured we'd try one more spot.
Find a decent run, which seemed impossible to find today and 4 or 5 casts out, float went down and I was yelling at my buddy that I had a fish on.
First few minutes I couldn't tell what was on my line, but then a flash of silver came flying out of the water. COHO!
I have learned the hard way, to let the fish tire itself out and not get stressed out and try and reel that sucker in super fast. My adrenaline was pumping as we were waiting to see if it was a hatchery. It got close to the water and sure enough, hatchery coho. I was yelling again.
Got it to the beach. Bonked it and finally pulled out that victory cigar I have been waiting to use for way too long.
We were home by 12.
Can't wait to go out again.

Big time! I've come home empty handed so many times, but so determined to get back out there.
I've also been fortunate enough to learn from some great guys and meet some awesome people on the river. Despite all the negative stuff, there are people on this river that love to fish and help others learn along the way. Not to mention all of Rod's stuff on here  ;)

Thanks man. My thoughts exactly. I didn't care the river was blown out, we were fishing today regardless. Worked four long days this week, just to fish on Friday. I was pretty excited it wasn't a chum coming out of the water.

Those are awfully tough conditions to get a fish to bite in, congrats!

I was on the lower today doing some scouting, vis is < 12 inches.  Probably 8-10 from what I saw.

Best of luck!
