After receiving some pretty positive reports in the last week or so, I ventured back to my favourite spot instead of heading to one of the tributaries. Water clarity was marginal. Visibility was sitting at around 1 foot, perhaps a bit more. It was good enough for spincasting, but I decided to fish with roe instead for once.
The incoming tide in the morning/early afternoon was still quite big today. I started at 10:00am when water was still a bit low, but the current quickly picked up once I set up and solved that problem. The bites came at around 11:00am and the first wave came with a punch. I managed to hook four coho jacks in a row but failed to bring any of them to shore. Other familiar faces joined us when the time was right. There were a dozen anglers but only a few were getting bites regularly. My fifth jack came about 30 minutes later. It came into the net without any drama. A wild fish it was, so back into the water it went without being touched.
An old gentleman beside me managed to connect with an adult coho salmon after I lost one a few minutes prior. He brought his fish in just as I was releasing a small cutthroat trout. It was around 6 or 7lb, wild so we took a photograph quickly before letting it go.
The current was quite strong today. My weight had trouble staying at one spot so it rolled in the mud at times. As the rod tip swayed up and down when it rolled, the line went loose once awhile because a fish had picked up the bait. The bites from the bigger fish seemed pretty light today. Just before the tide peaked, I detected a small tug on the holder so I picked up the rod to gain the slack line. As I picked it up, the other end suddenly gave me a big pull and I gave it a solid hook-set. It was definitely another adult coho salmon judging by the amount of weight. It gave a couple of good runs before being netted. It was another nice wild coho salmon, roughly around 6 or 7lb as well.
By 2:00pm, the bites quickly died off. I was lucky enough to connect with 7 or 8 fish today and missing another dozen. There were no other adult coho salmon caught beside the two we netted. A few other coho jacks were caught but overall the fishing was challenging and good bait seemed to make a big difference.
