Summer run steelhead in the cap?
« on: October 22, 2012, 06:58:09 PM »

Are there summer run steelhead in the capilano river (because it looks like it would be good habitat for them)? And if so what is the best month to target them.

Yes there are summer runs. Good habitat? Not what it was before the dam was built. Before the dam it had one of the best steelhead runs in BC. Best month to try for them? I would say get out there and try. It's called fishing and not catching for a reason. Someone else may suggest something but I don't like giving up all the goods. I would suggest between July and November though lol

Never fished the Capp but it's on my list. Beautiful river and one of those rivers no one talks about.

Best to get the summers fresh from may til the drought of July hits! Of course you can get them past that well into November but the best is when they are fresh n early! Not too many around so if you wanna put the time it can be rewarding!

Don't forget about the bait ban on the river in the summer as well.

Cap have both winter and summer run, alot of the summers this year are lost seymour fish due to the ocean release of the steelhead smolt.
I caught a good condition summer run on sunday, someone I know caught a bullet chrome one yesterday. But i did however catch 1 and lost abunch in late june.

The winter runs would start in december and go to about march-ish maybe may. the may fish would just have been sittin in the river for a while. I wouldnt try until late december after some good rainfall.

Please remember it is a catch and release fishery, hatchery and wild steelhead must be released with care.
