Hi........ fishing for Coho do you think it matters if you use Coho roe? Anyone have any thoughts or experience on using Coho vs. Chum vs. Chinook eggs for roe when targeting each?

I find that the bigger the egg the better. Spring roe and chum roe are my go to, however I have caught quite a few coho this year on coho roe.

For coho I lean on spring roe because the springs have just spawned. So their eggs are in the system.
For steelhead I like both coho roe and chum roe because they have most recently spawned and their eggs are more in the system.

But That's just a thought I have. When in doubt all roe works well for me if presented right.

They all do work but what really kicks them in gear is how well you cure the fresh roe. A little of this and a little of that = smashing them!

Fresher it is in my opinion would give best result. Fresh cured roe-frozen cured roe and lastly plain salted/borax roe (older guys like for jacks i thnk?

I'm with Greyghost on this one. It's that special little touch you add to the Xmas candy that gets you more bites than the other fishermen. And I also go with the motto, bigger is better !

I've always heard that size doesn't matter but how well you use it does...

When a fish comes up to bite your gob of eggs, you really think they are thinking of if its coho, spring or chum eggs? They key thing when fishing roe is how well you handle you eggs prior to curing, the cure, drying and how well you store them all they way up to your cast. Bigger eggs seem to work a little better, but I've caught fish on pea sized sockeye roe.
When everything comes down to it, its about presentation to the fish, no matter what method of fishing. Float size, leader length, hook size, size of bait, the drift and everything. If your presentation isn't good, then you can have the best roe in the world, but if it does not appeal to the fish, then you won't have as much success.
Fly fishing, float fishing, throwing jigs, blades and spinners, it all matters how it looks to the fish that determines your success.

I don't think one really attracts better than another...but then my use of spring and chum roe is limited.....but so far I think coho (and steelhead) roe turns out a better final product....personally I like the smaller egg size.

If you're going to be adding color with a cure they're all the same I think. However if fishing salmon roe naturally (just boraxed) I'd have to say coho roe is hands down the best to have as it has the best color. Some people may say that fish have a brain the size of a pea but I don't understand why people have such difficulty tricking them to bite lol

I like chum roe, nice big eggs, large skeins, good natural color,
Sometimes it turns out so nice I almost want to put the roe in my mouth.
