Question about roe, and how long it will last out of fridge?
« on: November 15, 2012, 12:13:34 PM »

I forgot some of my roe in my backpack and i was just wondering how long it lasts for. its well cured with procure and has some borax dusting on it.
It doesn't smell rancid at all, it still smells like the other stuff i have in the freezer.
Just curious if anyone has a better idea of if it is still useable or its just wasting time to use on the river.
It has been out of the fridge for about a week now and i just opened my bag to find it.

Would it be salvageable if i just put back in fridge for the next trip or just chuck it and get a new batch out from the freezer?

Does it still look and feel like it did when you were using it? Should be fine if it's the same!

I got lazy and left roe/borax in the fridge for a couple weeks and some of it was dried out and hard. I  re-hydrated the roe by brining it and man do they look good, almost better than before!

Good to go unless it has completely dried out, or smells rancid.

I find when roe is no longer good to use is when the eggs start to fall off the membrane. If the eggs or membrane fall apart easily just by handling then its no good to use.

WHAT DID YOU DO TO REHYDRATE THE ROE?

I left roe in the fridge for over a month, just procured and boraxed, caught a cupcakes ton of jack springs on it first week of sept. Should be fine, if the borax is still dry.

I found a bait box this sept. when the water was super low and it was hot out. The roe in the bottom had melted into goop and looked liked it had been baking for at least 3 days to a week. Didn't smell to pretty either. I scraped that slop out to salvage the box and decided to try fishing the roe because I was short on supply, well I'll be damned if I didn't kill 2 coho with it that night.

Fish will tell you if your roe is good.

I have a buddy who uses the most disgusting prawns you've ever seen (not to mention the smell). He swears they catch him more fish  ;D
Another person I know uses rancid roe he leaves in his vest until it's used up no matter how long, and he hits fish on it.
I don't think it matters as long as it stays on your hook and you can stomach the smell and touching it.

Well that roe did me justice today, got into quite a few chum and a tomato color coho.  and the brightest silver chum I have caught all year.

now a side quesiton.. How uncommon is it to hook into a chrome chum.  I have had about 3 silver does this year but I never bothered to take a picture because I had figured they were running so why would it be uncommon.. But hey next one a pic for sure.

What are you guys' odds of getting a chromer this year.. any good or what?
