Hey Hook.

Yep I do!
A few main main reason I do it:

1) I was not liking the amount of bleeders and badly hooked fish I was getting with the 1/0 hooks. The small hooks do way less damage.

2) It's way easier to bury a small hook than a large one, and I find most times I actually need to dig the small ones out with pliers they are hooked so well

3) I lose way less fish now. Probably upped landing % on steelhead and all other fish by at least 50% since I started doing it earlier this year. I figure it's due to the braid being able to twist any which way without the fish being able to get leverage, and the fact that the small hook buries deep every single time. I also don't miss as many hits with the trailer.

Matzou size 4 hooks are my favorite. Super sticky sharp (even more so than gammies) and many times a hook set isn't even required. Works great for the coho that tend to follow and grab your spoon and swim with it without you even knowing, they just can't let go of it after like they normally do!

looks like its tied to the spoon. I would think having a split ring there it would give the braid something to get stuck in.

I don't actually use a split ring or anything, just straight to the spoon.
What I do is tie a 20 braid/backing loop right to the hook (can whip them up really quickly, just some tying thread to the hook). Once you have the loop tied to the hook it's pretty much a loop to loop connection!
I don't use a split ring because I had a couple hooks work themselves right off the split ring a few times.


Make sure with this rig if you are only using the 20 pound braid/backing like I do that you check the braid after 5 or so fish (larger fish like steelhead that is - rainbows or bulls no big deal). I found that if I get lots of snags or hit a bunch of fish in a row that the edges of the metal on the spoon will actually sever the braid a bit and can result in the hook being pulled right off with a larger fish (or a snag which is good at times!). Not sure if a larger braid would help with that. On the other side of that if I make sure the braid is good I have landed steelhead up to ~18 pounds on this set up without issues. I generally replace the single hook on my spoon after every trip any ways as I just like starting with a super sticky hook and the matzou's are cheap at around 8 bucks for a 100 pack.

Man I tell ya, I tried making these last night and couldn't for the life of me figure out how you did it with the loop lol perhaps a link to the knot?
