Leapin' Tyee. Bigger hooks are equally as sharp as small hooks. The point I think that you are trying to make is that it take more pounds per square inch to force a thicker gauge hook into a fish vs a thin gauged smaller hook.

What about the length of the shank, the gap size and shape of the point? All of those will change the force needed to get that hook to get in there good.

Not really complicating it as it's all part of the equation. I'm sure most people set the hook good enough as it is. The difference in the force needed to sink a hook point bewteen a #1 and #2 hook would be so small, I highly doubt that a human would be able to tell without the assistance of a machine to make those measurements.

Now lets get this thread back on track, side pressure works extremely well on fish like chum and springs, especially if you find yourself under gunned with a lighter rod while hunting for coho.
