Thinking of going to Alta Lake does anyone know if it is suitable for a fast cat v tube or do you need a boat, dont fancy paying $150 to rent a boat for the day

If the lake is flat calm, which it usually is from morning to mid afternoon, it is perfectly fine to be in a tube. The Southerly wind often picks up in the afternoon and by 3 or 4pm it can be quite strong. That can make it tough to get back to the launch if you decide to venture to the middle or the north end of the lake. You don't have to go too far from the launch actually. The area in front of all the floating docks around the launch are often more productive than other spots on the lake.

Why don't you want an inflatable?

They pack up small.

They're super stable.

You got it, bad enough when i had my pontoon
i just want something solid that i can pack stuff in before i set off
I want to be able to hitch the boat up drive to the lake and launch
There is a small parking lot just up from the shore

hit the lake today for a few hours, breeze got up early in the morning so made it hard for me in the tube. lots of risers but nothing for me, I took the fly gear and a small spinner set up

Ive been fishing this lake a for a few years now, even more since i moved there a few months ago, during wind i like to troll a large muddler on full sinking line close to shore from my kayak, when calm as glass size 18 cahill dun's on the surface never fail.

This lake can be a bit funny, what works on 90% of other lakes doesnt on this one, weather has a big effect... im still learning alot from my neighbors who have been on the lake since the 60's, i go out almost every evening mostly 7-9:30pm, very rarely do i not catch anything. hmmm... looks out the window....

Buy an electric pump to go with it.  You can just plug it into your car and it fills up in a matter of minutes!

I have one for my seldom used float tube and it takes allot longer than a couple of minutes, as do the multitude of other peoples I see at the launch pad.

What size valve does your float tube have?
I have a hard bottom inflatable and can launch it in under 30 minutes from fully packed to fully loaded with my foot pump, and this is with an 8 horse gas motor, electric trolling motor and all my fly gear.  This time is considerably less if I keep it inflated and strap it to my roof like a car-topper or if I leave the motors at home.  You can also buy trailers for your inflatable and tow it like an aluminum boat, but as you said, you have no room to store it.  My inflatable is a two person Achilles and can fit in the trunk of my Civic with the gas motor on floor in front of the back seat.  You can buy inflatables boats with inflatable floor boards that are easier and quicker to set up than my rigid bottom boat.

got stuck on the north shore in my v-boat last month when the white caps picked up.(knew i shouldn't have ventured down there). had to hitchhike back to my truck. love the float tube but now i'm gettin a boat.
