Coho in Rice Lake

So I took my nephews fishing last night, and caught a small Coho in Rice Lake.
white gums, spots on back, this one had some slight par marks on it.
I let him go after the quick blurry pic i took.


anyone know how they get in there? I read something that a while back (2006?) they released fingerlings in the lake, but that cant explain why they're still there...
are they still releasing them from Syemour Hatchery? where are they spawning? it still had it's adipose so it wasn't hatchery released...

can they be kept? anyone know the specific regs?

Like many other lakes, salmon can end up in them via nearby rivers when water level is high. This one most likely comes in from the Seymour River. Once there, they become trapped and land locked instead of having the opportunity to spend their adult phase in the ocean.

You cannot keep salmon in a water body if the daily quota for that particular species is not specified in DFO's freshwater salmon regulation supplement.

There was an otter in the lake for over a week.  He was hanging around the floating walkway end of the lake.  I guess a lot of things can sneak in from the Seymour.

Except that Rice Lake feeds into the Lynn watershed, not Seymour.

Rice Lake is a fair distance from Seymour River, but since the upper Seymour has pretty high elevation, it could be possible one those hundreds of tiny streams that you see coming down hill, could carry a smolt into the Lake.

Not sure where you are going with this...It is not the distance from the Seymour River that matters, it is the elevation.  Water flows downhill, and the Rice Lake basin is in the Lynn watershed. It is separated from the Seymour River watershed by a ridge (divide) just east of the Rice Lake Road that is just higher than the 200m contour upon which Rice Lake sits. Any salmon smolt coming "down" into Rice lake had to have had a parent that swam "up" from Lynn Creek.

The coho smolt probably got mixed in with the rainbow trout tank when they loaded the truck to stock Rice Lake. That's my guess.

FFSBC only raises trout and char if i'm not mistaken.

Another one, much bigger, was caught today at family fishing day. It was the only fish brought ashore.

The upstream limit of migration for salmon in Lynn Creek is Twin Falls which is 1-2 km downstream of Rice Lake so it's unlikely the coho originated from Lynn Cr. I do recall a watercourse that used to cross the Fishermans Trail on the Seymour which supposedly drained Rice Lake according to a watershed employee I talked to many years ago. Perhaps there is or used to be a pipe through the ridge.

Actually I chatted with the Seymour guys today and this came up. They were quite certain that these coho are from the Seymour.

I know the creek you are talking and thought it drained rice lake as well.
