Tidal Fraser River, August 8th 2013
« on: August 08, 2013, 12:19:31 PM »

Went out at high slack last night to check the river.

Didn't see any fish jumping but water clarity looks good - just over 1 foot.
Should get better as the month goes on.

Water clarity in 2011 was really bad with the late freshet - 6" for most of August.

I thought the Fraser Pinks don't show up until late August or early September. May be a bit early now for them and the water is not clear enough either.

Water is plenty clear. It is better now than I saw 2 years ago in Sept.
My first pink in 2011 was Aug 21, and from the test nets they are running about a week early.

I was really only checking clarity as I checked a week ago testing my gear and it was really bad.
(Went to Furry Creek the Friday of the long weekend).

Cottonwood (Deas Tunnel) test fisheries shows the start of a small number of pinks around August 17 in 2011.
The main push of fish showed around August 31 but tapered off completely by Sept 18.

I'd heard that Squamish pinks were a week early so I thought I'd check.

Wow, took a look at test fishery numbers comparing 2011 & 2013 - August 1 to August 9.

Area 12 Seine - Johnstone Strait (near Port Hardy):

2011 - 14,000
2013 - 54,000

US Area 7 (San Juans):
2011 - 584
2013 - 10500

I think it is going to be a big pink year.

PSC August News Release for August 9th

Quote
DNA analyses indicate that Fraser River pink salmon continue to comprise a small proportion of the pink salmon migrating through the marine approach routes. An in-season estimate of the abundance of Fraser River pink salmon will not be available until late August, which is when their peak migration through the assessment areas is expected to occur.

there is nothing to indicate the run is huge or early.

Have boated a few pinks lately at Ambleside, fishing out of the boat with downriggers. Not sure where these are headed, but all have been LARGE for pinks.
