If the rod is rated 2-6, using 8 would exceed the limit of its design.  You can take a chance on it and hope the pressure doesn't break it, or buy a cheap rod from anywhere.  You can get a cheap rod any where for 8 to 20 bucks.

If you have the Daiwa Spinmatic Ultralight spinning rod rated 2 to 6lb, then you definitely should not put 8lb test line on your reel. Secondly, your Sahara 1000FE has very little capacity for 8lb test line. 6lb test might be ok for that reel, but its capacity is perfect for 4lb test.

Ultralight spinning rods are ok for pink salmon fishing, but you'll find bringing the fish in can take quite a bit longer than a medium/light rod. Daiwa Spinmatic has very little backbone, so it'd take even longer than a stiff ultralight spinning rod like a Shimano Clarus.

6lb test line is fine for landing pink salmon, but you will find that after fishing landing a few fish in the Tidal Fraser River for awhile, there will be damages to the line caused by silt and debris in the water. My recommendation is a slightly heavier rod and a slightly bigger reel like a Shimano 2500, so you can spool it with 8lb test. This setup can last you throughout the entire season without any issues.

Fished outgoing around Poplar area this morning - no signs of anything (either the nets that are out were doing an exceptional job, or they were hurting too!)

last night was also very slow in that area.  saw a few risers, had one on briefly saw no others hooked.

Surrey area was as slow as can be yesterday afternoon . More sturgeons hooked than pinks. LOL. Give it another week.

out yesterday and got skunked pink wise.... but a 5 foot sturgy made up for that !

today hooked many but only got to to the boat !
it will only get better ! water was much clearer today say a foot and a half compared to 6 8 inches yesterday

Really, I found the water murkier than yesterday. Different area I guess. I was at the north arm. No risers again. Seems to be much less action than on Friday they were jumping everywhere.

skunked, a few small bites out in richmond.  first time on the tidal.  nets everywhere so I'm sure that had an impact.

Skunked for me as well. Might try later this week when not so crowded. Sunday of the Labour day weekend tends to be ++ busy.

Got skunked on the Fraser around New West on Saturday so my wife and I decided to go to Sunshine Coast Sunday and give Gibsons a try for Pinks. We caught 4 in about 1 hour and lost about 20 together. My wife caught her first salmon! Tons of fish showing there. We would have liked to fish longer but we needed to catch the ferry back. A guy in a small dingy about 30 meters from shore caught about 8 in the 1.5 hours we were there. Just as a heads up to anyone wanting to try a different area for pinks until the Fraser really heats up.
