Fresh Sockeye $12 each
« on: August 17, 2013, 07:41:12 PM »

Noob poster and lousy fisherman here, thanks for reading this.

Word on the street in East Van: Fresh sockeye salmon $12 each. Story goes; FN caught, bought in bulk, and sold individually to nice immigrant people like my inlaws (who I believe I have FINALLY influenced not to buy). I don't buy salmon out of the back of trucks, or supporting anything that looks like a shady/greasy fishery.

That being said, I have resolved to become a better all-around fisherman, and I was wondering what my best proactive response to this kind of offer might be. Is this even legal, under any circumstance? I am not certain. However, if there is an opportunity to nail some fish poaching pr*cks, I figure it is time to get off the sidelines and get involved.

Your thoughts?

you can report it to the dfo so they are aware of the situation. But if its FN selling them.........that might just go no where....

Take video or pictures and go to the media.
That could work.
Going to DFO might not work, but if media pressures them they will respond.

Old news.

Musqueam been selling $12 fish this entire season. Hang around Stongs grocery parking lot and you'll see the rich white folks in their SUV's parked next to indian pick up trucks doing the fishy deed like some drug deal. Lame but when I think about how Harper appointed 18 senators in 1 day a few years ago - and many of those same senators are now under RCMP investigation for fraudulently reporting travel expenses in the 100,000k$ I have to just shrug.

The guy selling to my inlaws is not FN, which is the point I was most curious about. As for FN selling fish... I have a few friends downtown who sell fish and smoked salmon every year, they make a few bucks that all gets spent locally - unlike fish processor corporations like Pattison Group (CanFisCo) that pay foreign shareholders and have no reservations protecting profits by moving them right out of the country. I guess that when it comes to controversey in fishing, one does not need to look around too far...

Maybe I will send a plate number to the DFO and see what happens.

Until people stop buying salmon from the poachers, it will never stop. Pisses me off to no end when you hear these stories. Just waiting for some goon to offer me poached salmon...

Don't expect the average-joe fish lovers to stop buying the yummy sockeyes from FN. People are trying to save money and nothing can stop this unless DFO close the ridiculous FN fishery for what lofty title it is called (ceremonial or traditional). We all know where a big chunk of those catches are heading and there are tons of willing buyers. Close the darn fishery and patrol the river rigorously for poachers, and punish the law breakers heavily. That is the only sure way to stop this cheap sockeye source.
