looks good, slightly over dressed which will make if tough to cast with all that marabou.

try and get a slimmer profile and put a bump behind the long stuff to create the umbrella effect

couple examples:

The blurry ones are close ups where your subject (the flies) are too close and so are outside your depth of field (no macro setting?).  The clear pic is from a bit further away so the auto focus is able to clearly focus on them.  There also appear to be more light in the clear image so the shutter speed was quicker and compensated for any hand motion.

Can't see clearly but second one has profile bump in back and a stiff hackle wrapped under marabou.

stiff hackle wont prop as well as tying in tightly to a bump of dubbing, chenille.......etc

Stiff hackle works really well for flies where there is no rear section. normally you want the front area to profile as large or large than the rear area.


just keep this in mind when your tying Intruder style - LESS IS MORE - I know it sounds counter productive but the less material the easier it sinks and better it moves in the water. doing things like stripping one side of certain feathers or only using a couple wraps are the easiest way to cut down on bulk. Maribou is the worst for bulk, 3 turns of it is usually plenty unless you strip one side then you can do a couple more

ive been practicing some tying these days. had some marabou (green and pink) and some schlappen (blue) so i decided to tie some flys with them. i palmered both and added some pink tinsel and uv yarn here and there

i'm going fishing on monday to try them out going to take the fly rod and try these out

i hear chum like big ugly flies, so i guess these should work hahahahah 

would love your feedback on how/what to improve.

the ones on the left far are tied on plastic tubes i scrounged.

why the foam heads ?     or were you trying to create bass poppers

Most of those are very heavily dressed with marabou and wont sink quickly but will have decent movement, remember "less is more".

If you can get those flies deep enough then they should work. Try squeezing out all the air before casting them out the first, basically pre-soaking the marabou otherwise it will float on the surface until your sink tip sucks it under


example - the bottom fly I posted has only 2-3 turns of marabou and used from the tip end using only the long thin fibres. It also has, if I remember correctly around 20 strands of white ostrich. The 2-3 turns of white marabou was put in only to help fill out the profile to achieve the effect I was going for.
