why the foam heads ?     or were you trying to create bass poppers

are foam heads only for poppers or do they serve some other function other than being attractant?

I watched the video, sort of and I cant see the point of the foam head except to push water the same as a plastic cone would without adding weight however the foam would help make it float so perhaps this pattern is meant for "chugging or waking" across the surface.

if you want your fly subsurface this style probably wont track very nice because the foam head will lift while the hook at the back will sink causing your fly to ride at a 45 degree angle instead of level (ish) with the river bottom


Foam for the most part is used to keep the fly ON the waters surface. go back on youtube and look up skating flies for steelhead

yup, this is what happened. the foam actually expanded a little and the fly pretty much rode on the surface or just below. the hook was hardly any weight compared to the foam and so it was riding level.
I took off the foam and then it sank, and got a couple fish to follow it... but no takers.

spent 6 hours on the squam trying every fly i tied and several store bought ones, nothing worked, although they looked real pretty in the water.   
most likely i must have still been doing something wrong. will try some more next time

try making a purple flash bugger.

purple marabou tail - just tie in a clump. tie it the length of the hook shank and add 2 strands of flash on either side

body - Purple crystal chenille (medium would be the best size)

hackle - really pointless but if you want to add it then try a purple or black saddle hackle feather. tie it in so the longer fibres are at the head. take 1 or 2 full turns at the head also

bead - I myself would use hot orange, red or chartreuse however any colour would be fine. size 1/8" should suffice, smaller if you fishing shallower water or just use a lighter sink tip

im assuming your chasing after the chum in the Squamish which is why I suggest this fly.

This fly has been surprisingly effective for coho in a small local stream I have been fishing too.  I tied one on to see if I could get one of the many chum I could see rolling to bite, instead I got repeated hook ups of nice coho .  It was a pleasant surprise.  I have been using it ever since and have gotten as many takes on it as I have in the white  or olive sparkle buggers.

Steelhead fly, took me 1 hour to tie

Not bad, especially if your new to tying or tying big steely flies.

This took me approximately 10-15mins - prepping your materials before you tie helps cut down the tying time considerably especially if you plan on tying a few of the same pattern





If your new to tying these sorts of flies then tie only 1 when your combining materials. take them to the sink or bathtub and watch how they swim.

Here is a pic of one I tied yesterday and tossed in the sink. As you can see it has a good medium to large profile and will keep shape in the current.



Both of those flies utilize pretty cheap tying materials but are "built" to keep shape and have a lot of movement in the water. When it comes to these "less is more" is what you have to remember. Too much material and it wont move well with the current and also wont sink quickly at all.

I am quite new to tying, just started on April. I also test my flies, but in my fish tank. I do not think that I will be tying some more.

I am on my 4 or 5th season tying these type of steelhead flies and while I may know some stuff I'm always learning new things myself which is what keeps tying interesting. I used to just tie and fish easy stuff like MOAL leeches, Popsicles, other rabbit leech kind of things and the good old Egg Sucking leech.
