Im thinking to buy a spinning rod 8-12lb line test for salmon in tidal fraser river.I had heard both hmx and Shimano Convergence are pretty good rod. Which one would you guys recommand and why?

Get a 9' med-light Shimano Clarus if you can find one. Check out the reel seat in your hand.

I've used my Shimano Convergence spinning rod for a few years now. Price is good and it's definitely got a fair bit of use in it. I've been using it a lot the past week to catch pinks so I can't complain.

I have two Fenwick Hmx 10.5 feet. I use them on the boat, on the Fraser River. We land a lot of springs to the beach., they are very lite rods, and bend like you won’t believe, and never brake.

My spring salmon stick is a 10.5 feet Fenwick HMX and it is a great value for that price range.
Light and strong and can take a lot of abuse.

Love the Hmx. So much flex its shocking the  strain it can take. I also felt like it increased my landing ratio when I switched from convergence as it felt stiffer. This was a 10'6" casting rod however.

So I guess hmx is the winner,if I'm fishing salmon on the tidal Fraser should I get the spinning or salmon steelhead version ?what r the diff?

I've been using my light/medium convergence for years now landing chum,springs it's a great rod but I've always heard great things about hmx as well might convert over to that rod next to compare the 2.

depends on what your doing with it. if your throwing spoons i would go spinning. if your bar fishing i would go salmon steelhead.  a salmon steelhead rod is a trigger rod which is usually meant for larger spiecies. i have been using the spinning hmx 4-12lb rating. model #1274834. i picked this one because it is small enough that i can pack it as back up when i hit other local flows. hell you could even use it on trout.

The extra bend lets you get them closer for netting.

And which year of model is yours? i know they had came out a 2013 hmx model ,but dont know which tackle store carry the 2013model , most of them are like 2010 model.

I have a HMX 2-10lbs spinning rod 10' 6'' . I have broken two of these rods on salmon. The new one I have had for a couple of yrs. now so far so good.
