Abu 6501 c3 problem - sticky reeling and no free spool
« on: October 14, 2013, 05:38:02 PM »

Hey everyone,

I am having some problems with my abu 6501. I have done a lot of searching on the net and this forum but couldn't find my answer.
I recently replaced the pawl on my abu and when I went to use it again I noticed when I reeled in line it felt sticky or almost grinding. Also when it is in free spool mode I need to pull the line for it to come off, that is the spool won't turn on its own.
I have taken it apart and cleaned and oiled/lubed everything but am having the same problem.
I know mikes reel repair is my best bet but am hoping to fix this on
My own and save myself the drive, time, and money of getting it out there.

If anyone has any suggestions on what it could be and how to fix it I would really appreciate them!!

Thanks!

-Andrew

Sounds like you need new spool bearings, can be ordered online or picked up at most shops or mikes.

take out the pawl and see if it turns loose. if not take the reel end off and turn the spool in each end to see were the problem is. spin the handle with end off ,try to isolate the problem one section at a time. spray the bearings with brake cleaner and oil them if they arnt turning properly.

Sounds like the two small plastic pieces (part # 20211) are out of place or binding on the spool drum.

Awesome thanks for the suggestions!!

I took another look at it tonight and Johnny Canuck had it. When I was putting my spool back together the white clips weren't going into place, but where still some what in place enough for me to reassemble everything. I pushed them in the right spot and pushed the white clips individually in until they both were in between the circle on the part with the handle. Everything else went back together and I have smooth reeling and free spooling action.

Thanks again for the help everyone!

this here is a prime example why you need to take your reels apart SLOWLY and pay close attention to each part and how/where it sits inside.

My first time repairing a reel was my dads 5001 and when I popped the handle face off it just fell apart all over the table because I didn't know better. It took me an hour or so to figure out how it went back together before I could even figure out the problem

HOOK - this reminds me I need to take a peek in my Calcutta and see why my thumb caster button is sticking
