Got to our spot at first light again this morning to catch the incoming tide.  Second cast of the day on my homemade glow in the dark spinner I got a beauty female coho and she fought like crazy.  About an hour later I got another chum on another homemade spinner (orange and glow) and he fought pretty hard too.  He wasn't as chrome as the chum I caught yesterday, but surprisingly his meat was much more pink and its in the brine getting ready for the smoker.  Never used to keep chum until I learned how to properly brine and smoke them - now I think they're delicious.  We also landed another wild coho and lost couple others.  Saw lots of fish today too on the nice calm water.  Man are we lucky to live so close to the Fraser and have the privilege of fishing for these amazing creatures!

Nice fish! You had more luck than me today. Showed up to a spot on the lower Fraser just before dawn and there were already five guys fishing. I was skunked (fishing roe), one guy got a chum of about ten pounds on a pink spoon, another a coho jack on roe, another a dolly on a small spoon, the rest of us (eight or nine) all went home empty handed.

There was quite a bit of chum activity all day, but after last weekend where everybody was into multiple fish it was a disappointing day.

I know that bottom fish is missing the adipose, but if I didn't know any better, I'd say that looks more like a very clean chum than coho.

Today, I caught my first salmon for October on the Fraser. In less than 5 minutes of casting my lure, I thought I snagged a rock! It was actually huge chum, over 25lbs and it took me over 10 minutes to land it. I was the only person fishing in the area, but luckily after 10 minutes another fisherman arrived with a net and he helped me net the fish. The fish was so powerful that my hook eventually broke when I unhooked the fish.

Chum Caviar - the wife worked on this today and I have to say its absolutely delicious!

Did you eat it raw?

I had it once and it was cooked, and it wasn't too bad, but I can't say I'm a fan of it.

you bet - she just poured 120F hot water on it to separate it from the skein - raw caviar and its awesome!

you'd be surprised how chrome chum can get...i can't see any spots on that fish nor brushed silver colour on it's caudal and the snout is long and narrow.. the eye sockets are also shallow and wide where cohos usually have theirs sunken...then again, a photo can sometimes fool you.

dude trust me it was a coho - chum meat never looks like this:

and I've never seen or caught a chum in a river where hasn't started showing purple bars (even if they're faint) - I think you need to be in the ocean to catch a chum that isn't showing any signs of spawning

hey you caught the fish so i'll take your word for it, like i said, it's sometimes hard to tell from a photo...i've caught chum off island 22 so chrome you'd think you were in the open salt chuck.

The same guy got another chum of about 15 lbs shortly after you left. There was a lot of chum activity so close to shore for about 10 minutes then suddenly it died off.

The black mouth with white gums is a dead sign of a coho.  But it does have that football shape of a chrome chum.
