It sounds like the worm gear is toast. I had that happen before, got a new worm gear and pall for 25$ done in about 10mins from mikes in abbotsford

My pawl just went as well in my abu 6501. If your getting it from mikes get the ceramic pawl it'll last longer.
Not sure if you need a new worm gear maybe just the pawl, that was the problem with mine at least

Yup I have been there before too, I would replace both at the same time. Often times one will go and then shortly after the other one will.

I did a major upgrade on my 6500 last year and it casts like a dream.

You can see my post on it here: http://www.fishingwithrod.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=31497.msg299829#msg299829

To recap, here's what I did:
- ceramic main bearings
- ceramic pawl (pin that fits into the groove of the worm gear and makes the wire loop move back and forth)
- dual bearing worm gear bar
- bearing idler gear (translates handle cranks into spool turns)

Cost me about $50 for all of this.

I have the same reel ,probably needs upgrading too as it makes a whirring noise when I cast.
I think some of the gears on the inside are plastic?
Assume these are the ones that are reccommended to be upgraded to ceramic?

I would replace the following parts:

Helps with general use of the reel:
- Ceramic or stainless main bearings

Helps with casting:
- ceramic pawl gear - $6 - http://www.mikesreelrepair.com/ceramic-pawl-repl-pn5176-p-86458.html
- dual bearing worm kit - $38 - http://www.mikesreelrepair.com/dual-bearing-worm-4000-6000-p-6357.html

The worm gear bar hold the pawl gear and if it is working poorly, you will not be able to cast very well.
This is the part that runs back and forth when you cast (the line runs through the hoop attached to the pawl).

You may be able to get away with lubricating the worm gear and pawl but you may want to inspect it to make sure.

replace the wormgear and pawl together every time either needs replacing. Its like doing a brake cylinder on your vehicle, if your doing one side you should always do the other.

I have replaced many wormgear/pawls on my reels. very quick and easy

If you can afford the upgrades then do them. My wife's reel has all the upgrades and it casts extremely smooth

I have never bothered to look but what upgraders are there for Calcutta's ? I know they are pretty smooth but I wouldn't mind if it was smoother  ;)

Looks like one of those cheap FIBICA baitcasters out there that they sell a dime a dozen. If so, do your self a favour and get a classic ABU Ambassadeur C3 or C4 (NOT BCX or SX!!!) and enjoy a great workhorse for a lifetime. Don't bother spending money on junk.

seriously  ???

you can get a used Abu off craigslist for around $60. I would bet this reel set you back more than that new

you can also call Mike's reel repair or Express reel service and buy a refurbished reel from either of them for slightly more than CL prices. usually because they have done some upgrading, cleaning and repairs where CL people have done nothing
