Scratches in brand new Milner Center pin reel
« on: October 24, 2013, 01:29:54 AM »

Hi guys,
I am very new into Centerpin and this week I just bought myself a brand new Milner reel from a local tackle store. When I got home and took the spool apart, I found some scratches:

1) scratches around the spindle near the bottom
2) scratch or loosing color on the silent retrieve clicker plate
3) scratch on the spool just underneath the clicker plate

so consider this reel has never yet fish on river. Are these normal wear that will eventually appear? or should I send it in for service?

Also when the reel spin, it makes some minor noise that can only be heard when you put it close to your ear, is this normal to all cage reel?

Thank for any advice,
JC

That pic with the red circled scratch is very similar to the scratch on mine and almost the same place.as far as noice my talisman is bushing and doesnt make a sound but it looks like yours is bearing and if it is yes they do make noise wich may get louder as time goes on but does not effect performance at all its just the bearings rolling against the race.

Your spindle is different than mine thats why i thought it was a bearing reel but i looked at pics better and it appears its bushing ,so it should run silent  .and those are tool marks on your spindle wich dont look good.that part should   be machined smooth with no marks on it.

Totally agree....good guy to deal with!  I have a strange feeling who ever sold you that reel sold you a second hand reel claiming it was new or you were sold what they call a "Blem" in which John does sell for much cheaper because the only difference is cosmetic flaws.

I know the family and all though I have chosen not to ever buy another Milner reel I would still refer people to him as John is keen on helping with reel issues even if it's not a reel he makes.

One thing I need to add: Milner reels get nicked easily so I would highly recommend not putting the reel down without putting a case on it first. I just don't understand why guys do that and frankly it annoys me to see it!

The guy who sold me the reel is very nice and helpful.  I didn't get a cheaper price for this. I paid a full price.

go back to the store and have them pop open another brand new reel exactly like yours. compare them and see if it also has the same blemishes. Those small blems should not be there, well the "scratch" under the gear looks as though it may be on several reels from a "tool slip"

at first I thought those spiral lines were supposed to be there but then looking further im pretty sure they are tooling marks which should have been smoothed off, those may be whats causing the minor noise your hearing.

John makes quality stuff and stands behind his products.

So assume that you have the reel for longer than I do. Just wondering if your silent retriever disk is nickel black and does the color eventually peel off like mine in the picture?

They don't have another bushing reel, there is only one bearing left

No color on mine...and no grooves on the center piece. I think you should take it back and get a new reel.  For $800-$900 dollars you can get a better reel then that..

call around to other stores close by who also carry these reels. Take it in and compare it. If their reels don't have these same marks I would buy theirs and return yours or return then buy. I agree that a reel anywhere over $500 should never have any sort of unusual blemishes

where the black is coming off is there also scuffing on that screw head  ?

if so then its rubbing where it shouldn't and I would 100% take it back

Wow that should have never got past quality control. There is no excuse for a shaft that looks like that. Take it back

Leapin' tyee has a sizeable collection of Milner reels so he knows his stuff! I have a 4" Talisman that has no marks anywhere so I'm with LT and would go back to the seller and maybe get a new one or get some money back and go with a Kingfisher!

Highwater in NV has a couple 4" Talismans that you could buy if you got your money back! I keep spinning the rootbeer one when I'm in there cause it's so pretty but can't get myself to buy another Milner reel.

Why would someone putting there reel down without a case annoy you???
