i dont know about nanaimo, but if one opened up in vancouver, wouldn't that basically drive the smaller local shops out of business due to the competition?

and do they have any "experts"... guys/gals that know the local waters? i've never been to cabela's so i have no idea how it's run.

I hear it's going to be just slightly larger than the WSS store, 10% or so. It will be 1/2 the size of the Tulalip store and 1/3 to 1/4 the size of the Tacoma (Lacy) store down in Washington state. Have to wait and see how it all shakes out in the end.

It won't put the little guys out of business. With places like crappy tire and army and navy there is already a big name competition... but this is one of those sports where plenty of people will only shop at their local tackle shop.

Cabelas will probably have staff that is trained in the stuff they sell, rather than the true experts you find at the local shop who know the gear inside and out as well as the waters.

It is bad for the local tackle shop for sure. Cabela can out price them to drive them out of business. People don't need personal service for all their stuffs. Yes they may go to tackle shop for nice custom rods, but when it comes to supplies like hooks and lines, Cabela is going to be hard to beat. If the tackle shops lose too much of those business, they can't sustain their business.

And Cabelas can't beat Wal-Mart prices, and Wal-Mart can't beat deals you can find online....

its pretty much all relevant. whether you are a huge corporation or small business you have the same expenses. Yes cabelas will get there gear cheaper, but they still have to sell it high because of their huge overhead. a small tackle shop doesn't have the same financial strain as a huge corporation nor the buying power, but their overhead is so low they don't need to worry about buying a lot of stock. To me its only going to keep the small guys honest. You go into a small shop and just shake your head at the prices. bottom line i sweat and bleed for my money, and whoever is going to offer the best price will get my money...

The same worries were brought up when wholesale sports moved in to Langley.
Last I checked none of the tackle shops have closed and two more have popped up. Fred's in abbotsford and one in Burnaby
