2013 Pink run size
« on: October 24, 2013, 02:18:30 PM »

I have been trying to figure out the final estimate of the pink run this year.

The Pacific Salmon Commission site has the following document posted:
http://www.psc.org/FraserPnl/Status/FRP_Fraser_sockeye_pink_status.pdf

There are 2 numbers for pinks shown there.
"Accounted run-to-date" = 45 million
"Run size adopted in-season" = 26 million

Not sure which number is the appropriate final one for the estimated run size.

I think the 45 million is based on the fish counting machines so that number is more accurate.  Who knows why they are just not biting as much as in previous seasons.

This was my first time fishing for pinks, had a blast. If what everybody said is true about them not biting, then I can't wait til 2015.

It's a real shame we will never know the magnitude of this pink cycle but I'll go out on a limb and suggest the C-V has had a record run.  I have been on the river when populations were estimated at 250-300 thousand fish; most definitely more this season than then.  These fish are so important to the entire ecosystem; an example, have you guys ever seen more gulls on the river?? but sadly, due to DFO budget constraints, these pinks are not enumerated >:(
Others on this forum have more experience in the pink populations in this system ... perhaps they will chime in.

PSC and DFO don't track the actual return to the extent they do with sockeye. In most cases both the initial and in season estimates are very conservative. I can't remember the actual year (2003?) but the last big return - estimated in season at 22 million was later pegged around 30 million.
