An old chum with sea lice??
« on: October 28, 2013, 10:43:16 PM »

I got a chum today it was black an old chum. But it had sea lice on it some long things on the sides I thought the fresh ones have sea lice?
They looked like leeches or worms

Last year I caught MANY chum in the salt chuck that were absolutely disgusting.
I was actually into a few schools off the beach that were quite bitey, but rarely got clean ones.
Most were black bellied and barred up under slightly silver scales.

A few actually even had mold on them in the estuary area I was fishing, didn't think that was possible in salt water  :o I'm thinking those ones must had been in the river a short time and dropped back or something.

Sea lice are most often found around the anal fin or adipose fin areas of the fish. If they were around the gill plates or pectoral fins they were more than likely worms.

I had the same question stuck in my head for the past week. thanks Johnny Canuck for clearing that it was worms and not sea lice.

Oh good grief!  Worms; urgh [shiver runs down spine].  Do these things infest the flesh?  I'm hoping to catch a relatively clean chum in the near future for the smoker and the thought of worms (nematodes I presume) is more than a little off-putting.

that must have been what the little leech was that was stuck to my hand on sunday. I bet I fished with it there for a good 10-20mins before noticing it. It even left a tiny little pin size red mark after I flicked it off  ???

I have seen them before but not too often. never had one stick to me though
