Fishing With Bent Rod - How to catch Chum Salmon on Jigs
« on: November 21, 2013, 07:19:50 AM »

Hi Folks, we're still catching chrome Chum Salmon all over the Fraser Valley.
But lately I have been witnessing anglers struggling to get biting Chums due to dredging the bottom and incorrect lure choices.
So for those not in the know, this video is for you.
For those already dialed maybe I can touch on something that you might be missing.
For the rest, you can just laugh at my antics  :P.

Always love watching your videos, you pretty much taught me the basics of jig fishing over the years, and then its all putting it into place and knowing what colors to use when.
Any one learning to use jigs should pay attention to Rods videos.

Cheers.

Great gear as well. Jigs that stand up to big tough chum all day long.
Quality makes a difference.

Great video, thank you.

I liked the quality of you jigs so much I purchased your kits to make my own.  These were my first attempt:

Short floating in 2-3' of water with a 20 inch leader, just as you say in your video, worked splendidly, as you can see from my bro-in-laws grin after catching his first chum yesterday.

hmmm wonder why the image does not show up?

I love how he actually explains when to use lead-head jigs over pin-head... Lead heads are for when your using a net, because a thrashing fish in a net can snag a pin-head and rip the jig apart. Makes perfect sense.

Thanks for the video. That looks like the main stem Fraser. I wonder if your jigs on float work on tidal Fraser? Perhaps need to find a place with strong tidal flow to drift fish with float? If it works, I will load up some jigs for next year tidal fishing. It may be a bit too late now for this season on tidal Fraser.

If I am not mistaken, that is the Harrison River. I will give these jigs a shot tomorrow on the stave. The jigs look great and very well made.

you are posting links to images from bcfishing reports forum.... that requires login information for viewing pictures, and you can only view them on that forum i think.

Not impressed by the fishes on the rocks.  Terrible release.  Get a net.

He kept the one dragged up on the rocks and the other one escaped so there was nothing wrong with the vid ?

Video does not show him keeping it. YOu must have been with him.   The one got away after being drag on the rocks, plus , he still does not have a net and he is not in the water deep enough to be able to release that fish without hitting rocks.

Well, if what is said in this article is true, then that escaped fish quite possibly died from head trauma soon after escaping.

Best thing to do is not bring the fish into water shallower than knee-deep, that way even if they do escape they wont be bonking themselves on the rocks. Perhaps not as important for chum because you can keep any of 'em, but if that was a wild coho or steelhead he would have had to release it.
