Centerpin braking
« on: December 22, 2013, 06:48:05 PM »

This is something i've been meaning to post for awhile.  Over the last year when fishing in foul weather I've had my float go down and when i go for the hookset my pin slips in my hand when braking.  Usually my hands are like prunes and my reel wet.  I have tried drying both but when your fingertips are like prunes it doesn't help much.  Short of using both hands to brake i can't come up with a better solution.  So far i haven't lost any fish due to the slipping (which surprises me),  but with steelhead season upon us I would hate to lose a s/h because the reel slipped on hookset. Any ideas?  Thought about using some sort of glove on reel hand, but thought it might hinder feathering the reel.

Sounds like you're either gripping the rod and reel incorrectly or you have very small hands.
My last 3 fingers are always in contact with the rim while my thumb and index hold the rod.
This is how I hold it, never had a problem with slippage.
How's your hookset? Doesn't take alot to sink a sharp hook.

Stick some grip tape on the rim of your reel.

I hold it identical to you.  Have large hands (my wife says extra large ;)).  My pin is a Kingpin and the rim is polished aluminum.  Dont have this problem with my Avon it has a slightly textured rim.

Grease then front 40 or 50 feet of your line so that it floats on top better and allows for less friction when setting the hook. I'm not familiar with you reel so I can't comment on it, but I've never had a problem with my hand slipping. Besides that, I never, ever try to set a hook with a slack line.

....try to reel down a bit before setting the hook so you have hold of a handle on the hookset....or just hook a handle with your thumb (free-hand)when you notice the take.....tough to get away from a two handed approach for a positive hookset....one handed option would be to use your fingers on the line on the spool instead of the rim,may give a better grip.....

theres no need to reef the hook set on a cp rod. :) decent cp's rod have good solid butt for good hookset that don't require you reefing the hookset.

I have had this issue durring long wet cold windy steelhead trips. my suggestion is when that float dips just take a step back and bring the rod up, shoulden't need a big yank to set the hook.  but sometimes the hand just doesnt feel anything which is a pain and that is why i cup the reel if it gets too bad.

I wear a glove and cut the tip off my feathering finger.
