Was over at mill lake today seen whole bunch of lites all over the  lake in the water does anyone have any idea what's up  with that hopefully it won't bother the fishermen trolling or recreational rowers out there

New lights have been installed at Mill Lake Park in an effort to deter geese.

The new lit buoys float in the lake and were installed as part of the city's Canada goose population control program.

According to Environment Canada, numbers of Canada geese have increased dramatically in recent decades and are now at unprecedented numbers.

The lights in Mill Lake are solar powered, flashing amber LED lights that they city says will discourage the geese from nesting by disrupting their roosting patterns at nights.

I was on Mill lake for a good part of the day on Sunday and those lights must be doing their job because the vast majority of the geese are not on the lake  - only a handful left. No goose crap on the launch pad was nice. Here's a link to the lights used:http://www.awaywithgeese.com/

On another note: the fishing was spotty for trout - I thought because the hatch was really thin and I figured the pellet fish haven't figured out that chironomids are their main food source. I did manage about a dozen on a dark brown with silver wire chironomid fished 2-1/2 to 3' down in shallow water. Some fish obviously figured out the chironomids as that's all I found with a couple throat samples.

I didn't hook into any bass or pike but then again, I never targetted them. I did overhear someone on the bank say a pike was either hooked and lost or caught last week.

One guy waded out on the west end and was throwing a big spinner which must have had a 4" blade. I didn't see him get any action and I was suprised he didn't sink in the muck when he waded into the pilings.

Interesting, they should install some at Deer Lake in Burnaby as well. The shoreline along the east-side beach was lined with a neon green algae last summer , and I'm almost certain the goose poop had something to do with it, as that's where the water fowl like to hang out (and get fed).

I was there on Sunday also, took a few on a damsel pattern on a quick strip in. There was one fellow fishing from shore on thie south shore, off the wooden platform that I thought was fishing two lines, I confronted him about it and he just shrugged his shoulders at me. I phoned to report him, took pictures and got other involved taking pictures and he started to pack up, he wasn't using two rods but four , two were hidden in the weeds beside the dock. All the rods were telescoping and he put them in his back pack and took off. What a scum bag. I wish I had a clear picture of his face but I was too far away and he kept his head down.

That's a great idea having lites to deter the geese now all we need is another solution to deter the cormorants  and poachers
