So the DFO predictions show a good sized Sockeye run for the Fraser this year. Anybody think they're going to open retention for them? It's been a while since I've had fresh caught Fraser Sockeye.

70 million or whatever the prediction was is just a wild number they pulled out of their my friend, they have no clue on the returns would rather not see it open anyhow and not teach terrible ethics to new fisherman to use on other systems.

This is the big return year. Barring a disaster it will open for retention. Should open next year as well then be shut down for 2yrs. This has been the trend a couple cycles over now.

What I like is getting my limit of socks on the fly. They sure do fight well

It's well known that sockeye don't bite in the Fraser River. But how about in the salt water? Would they hit well presented spoons or flies from the beach if traveling close enough at the mouth of the Fraser?

Sockeye do bite in Freshwater but they are "less agressive"than other species like pinks or coho once they hit the river.  Visibility is the key when you are fishing for less agressive biters.  I'm sure that during the times where the Fraser gets optimal clarity and a big push comes through, you should be able to get a few to bite.  I think the problem is that flossing is way more productive so people tend to go that method.

btw I'm trying to start a flossing debate here

The ocean is the place to get them if you have a decent boat.

Sparse pink hoochies are the ticket with lots of flashers.

Keep in mind that there will be a large commercial fishery based at the mouth that will severely limit the number of fish in the river many days.

I think 50% probability forecast is 23 million - meaning chances are 50% it will be that number or higher. The 70 million is the right end of the curve - the left is 7 million. The forecast also notes how variable it has been since the late 90s or so.
