It looks like there are several ways to attach a blade to the shaft of an in-line spinner:

1. Putting the shaft directly through the blade;
2. Using a clevis;
3. Putting the blade on a ring around the shaft;
4. Putting the blade on a chain attached to the shaft.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each method?

Not sure of the advantages of others but I find the clevis method works best

How do I make sure the blade actually spins instead of just flapping?  Every blade I have looks bilaterally symmetrical, so I don't see why the water would push one side of the blade more than the other.

I use two 2 way swivels, ring, And blade, ring in the middle, blade on ring, ring holding life together, food to go

Depends on whether you are making weighted or non-weighted spinners.
Weighted spinners use a Clevis. Non-weighted I use a split ring between two barrel swivels.

How do you cast a non-weighted blade-between-swivels spinner?  Do you add a weight elsewhere on the leader?

Attach a piece of pencil lead on the main line just before your leader.

I use non weighted spinners under a float the same way I fish with roe or jigs etc.
you can free drift them or hold back a bit to get them to spin or don't let out line and swing them thru the current.

I guess the "shaft through the blade" configuration works only with a special blade?
