Buntzen Lake, April 13th 2014
« on: April 13, 2014, 02:07:07 PM »

Fished Buntzen from 8 - 11:30. Caught three off the eastern cliffs just past the point on a ford fender with a wedding ring and worm combo. Fish were jumping and feeding like crazy for about an hour around 9:30-10:30, then died off just like that. Caught three rainbows, one ten incher and two 13 inches. Not a bad start to the season for me. :)

Serious question, can you actually feel a 10" fish behind a Ford Fender?

I had the drag set low, so yes...yes I could  ;D lol. After he struck it was hard to tell he was on though until I had eyes on him.  :-\ But I stick with my tried and true methods. A ford fender might not always work best in Buntzen, but it almost always works.  ;)

I'm not much of a salmon fisherman, and I usually spend my free time in the winter hiking/snowshoeing, and/or writing, etc. I save my fishing for when the weather gets warmer.  8)

Cheers.

GL!
I'll need to get some of those wooly buggers one of these days.
FYI - the trout seem to be biting best by the eastern cliffs, but it's very random. One moment they're biting, the next they're not. :)

I will be out there Friday to try out my new boat
Hope to get a few on the fly, Last year i tried many different flies and had luck on most of them, the fish tend to be on the move a lot, so the bite can be sporadic

Ruby eye leeches worked great a few weeks ago, fished on hover line and on a type 6 worked great!

well so nice to try out the new boat :)
learned a lot--ie make a list of what to take (Forgot a few things)
also a full battery will not last more than 5hrs if you are trolling the whole time :-[
normally i would not troll but it was my Brother in Laws first time with a fly rod, so casting was not an option for him
had to use the oars to get into shore :-\
still got into a few fish and my Brother in Law got his first fish on a fly rod--cuttie at that
was a nice day on the water, quite a few boats out there

I feel your pain. I need a new battery, and a motor with a Digital Maximizer apparently. Canadian Tire has the Minn Kota Endura Max 40 on sale for $229 until the 24th of April. I think I`m gonna spring for one.

Well, I guess that is going to depend on your battery, the size/type of boat, and the speed at which you troll.  My battery on my 10' inflatable Achilles will go a few days if trolling on low speeds 1-3.  An aluminum car topper with two guys in it, pushing at 4 or 5 will likely drain pretty quick.

Ya I have an endura 40, and On speed one and two it will last for 2 days on my 10 ft inflatable. That's doing a little trolling and a little high speed motoring from spot to spot. If left on trolling speed, it would probably last 12 continuous hours. You may have a battery issue Britguy.

Its a brand new battery
deep cycle 12V, I did notice others at the lake with two batteries so i am sure they have had similar issues
mine is a 12 footer and there was two of us, plus the wind was quite strong at one point so it was not just smooth sailing :-\
a 10 foot inflatable ( and if on your own) is full of air and rides on the top of the water, a 12 foot aluminum boat sits lower and weighs a lot more (especially with two big guys) so not really a comparison.

Only if you were on a higher speed than usual would it make a difference. It's not a gas motor, and won't suck more "juice" when it's under load. What speed were you using? And just because the battery is new doesn't mean it's functioning properly. Deep cycles can be finnicky.
