RedBull Divide and Conquer on the Cap next Sunday
« on: June 02, 2014, 05:51:25 PM »

Might be a good idea to find another spot to fish next Sunday as the Red Bull Divide and Conquer race is going on. Should be cool to watch, though!

I like this line in their marketing:
But kayakers should watch for other users headed upstream – Chinook salmon up to 45 pounds are likely to pass you in the opposite direction, watched closely by hungry bald eagles, herons and osprey perched on the rocky walls.

I wonder how it will be with the water level being quite low and nothing but sunshine in the forecast.  I would think that they would be going a lot slower than normal and constantly scraping the bottom.  I seriously doubt Hydro will help them out by bumping up the water level, it will probably only be around 1 opposed to about 5 in the picture from the link.

Highly unlikely of encountering a 45 lb. chinook at this time of year.

I'd bet there hasn't been a 45lb Chinook in that river since the dam was built.

A guy tried to convince me that he caught a 60 lb chinook in the Cap.  He swore he had a picture!

There was a story in the North Shore News about 3 or 4 years back about a 12 year old boy and his friend who caught a 54 pound Chinook in the caynon section.  There was a picture in the paper aswell, I was skeptical but nevertheless it was big spring, but it was probably 2-3 weeks past its prime but they unfortunatley kept it anyways.

Might be interesting to watch.  I have no idea how they are going to get over the rocky sections in low water.  The rocks are very slippery.  I've seen people try to take inflatables and tubes during low water and they usually end up abandoned in the canyon.

Perhaps they have an arrangement to open the dam that day.  I believe it's only 5km as well, not the 10km indicated.

Quote
Divide & Conquer kayakers will put in with a seal launch off the rocky riverbank at the Capilano Salmon Hatchery in the shadow of the imposing Cleveland Dam. Water levels are high and reliable in June, and can reach class IV, but can also fluctuate quickly, depending on the dam and Mother Nature.

Paddling the drop and pool Capilano River is an unforgettable and challenging ten-kilometer plus read & run course, that will transport you far from the urban environment that surrounds it. The run offers a variety of small feature playspots ranging from the occasional surf wave, to the odd lateral spin/cartwheel pourover.

I didn't get a chance to go watch the event, but did check the Kayak club camera and the water level was very low. Not sure how crazy the action would have been for them.
