Bar Fishing Chinook Setup
« on: June 02, 2014, 06:46:00 PM »

Hello everyone,
Never bar fished before and was looking to get all setup. I have a jet boat and usually fish for sturgeon in the fraser river. But would like to expand my horizon's when the salmon season opens up.

I'm currently using technicum's with penn 321 with 120lb braided mainline and was wondering if I need to purchase new rods and reels to bar fish. Never barfished before so any advice is welcome. Also have a pair of shimano's for coho/chum with abu garcia's 6500 loaded with 25lb mono. Which i'd assume is way too light...

Rod has a good video for chinook bar fishing. They are in the Chilliwack region in the video, so the river runs strong, with the need for heavier gear. You need led 16oz more or less depending on current, a t-bar set up ( i just buy them anywhere) 25lb line would be too light, i use 50 braided. On the hooks you can use spin n glos in good current, or corkies n wool. Watch the video for good reference, on utube, i thing there is 3 parts...
Then there is flossing in hope...

So im wondering if you can reuse the gear from sturgeon for bar fishing if you rerig....
i know the spots, just not the proper setup. i've seen the you tube video's on the spreader bar... just wondering if the guides on the river run two different setups for sturgeon and chinook, and if i can get away with running one rod to cover both applications...

I'm no expert on bar fishing in the non-tidal portion of the Fraser River so here are some links from our website about it:

Your reels will work great. I would suggest a different rod though than what your are using for sturgeon. My goto bar fishing setups are penn 321's on 11' trophy xl "fraser king" rods.

Depending what model Technium they may be just right for bar fishing.
I would try them out before I ran out and bought new stuff.
Would be sweet to not have to bring along another set of rods if you wanted to do the full combo platter.

I used Penn 320,s and they worked just fine bar fishing and tossing them big 18 oz,ers.
