So today I spent my 5pm onward at Mill Lake with my Kayak and new found love, the fish finder. I paddle around for a good 20 minutes finding a drop off at one end of the lake, and a drop off at the other with the intentions of trolling the whole ledge, and I do just that. Im pretty ghetto with not wanting to switch up baits and re-tie units so I went for the good ol' 2 way swivel, 30" leader, small hook and powerbait and started to slowly troll backwards (So my rod is directly infront of me for rod/fishfinder viewing pleasure) and I'm doing quite well catching 8 fish, all released with hook in the face somewhere. This is dis interesting, it's the ones I didnt catch will forever haunt me.
I lost two hooks this evening. The first one, trolling along, slow and steady in 18ft of water, 12ft a yard to my left, 22ft a yard to my right, when my rod slams down, I set with line peeling *Snap*. Reel to find my line broke next to my hook. No big deal, maybe I had a fray. I replace the line and tie the most gorgeous knot glistening beside a red gamakatsu hook that ive ever seen, squish more power bait on this hook and away I go. Troll troll trolll, paddle paddle paddle, BAM. Rod gets destroyed again, instant 10 ft of line gone, rod tip in the water and snaps me off again, somewhere in the middle of my leader.
Granted, my leader is only 2lb test, but i've landed some 6lb fish with it before, soooo, my question is, what do we think it was?!
Also, if anyone ever sees this ridiculous spectacle on the road feel free to honk and wave.
