Electric Motor
« on: June 23, 2014, 10:55:14 AM »

Anyone have any advice on what pound thrust is ideal for trolling lakes in a 12ft aluminum? Will be purchasing a Minn Kota, just don't know what I should go with.

Also, how long will a battery last approximately?

Thanks in advance!

Make sure and get a motor with the maximizer.  It will prolong battery life and allows you to fine tune your speed.  Almost any size of electric motor will allow you to troll in a 12ft.  More power will help when fighting the wind.

Thanks for the offer, Does it have the Maximizer? After doing research it seems it's the way to go.

hi Danny
I just purchased the 40lb thrust Minnkota with maximizer.  Used it only once so far, I had 2 adults and 2 kids.  It worked well and i was happy with it.  Battery time will depend on many factors but generally sounds like you should get a day or 2 with it.

I went to the max: Minn Kota R/T 55. Moves my 12.5' porta bote along at almost 5 knots per hour.
Crappie battery (Bad Battery, not the fish) lasts a day of hard use. but got a good one from canadian tire
and lasts two days and then some.  But just like an engine, the more you haul my friend the more you use gas...
uh...battery juice? Electrolyte? the stuff that burns holes in your clothes? energy? BC hydro power?

Weird thing is: never had my motor in saltwater.
